JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

Big milestone for Ted by easily reaching ¥3 billion. It has become far and away the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all-time, and will soon overtake Home Alone 2 and become the third highest-grossing imported-comedy of all-time behind the original Home Alone and Pretty Woman.

This one could be different, Japanese love this kind of movie. In 2010 Alice was very successful :)

I think 3D movies are underperforming, and bombing at the BO not because they aren't good, or because the public isn't interested in them. But in a country where the 2D movie price is ~$20, a 3D movie is just too expensive for most. There aren't enough 2D showings to compensate either. At least this is my reasoning behind all of this.

Another pretty slow weekend at the box-office with the holdovers shining the most.

Fortunately, next weekend sees the latest Doraemon film open against Oz: The Great and Powerful which will definitely liven things up a bit.

Saturday Estimates (03/02)

Film / Rank / Sat. Est. / % change from last Sat. / Day in Release
1 Flight (Paramount) ¥84 million ($915,000), 0, Day 2
2 A Good Day to Die Hard (Fox) ¥74 million ($805,000), -43%, Day 17
3 Ted (Toho-Towa) ¥61 million ($665,000), -30%, Day 44
4 Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) ¥52 million ($565,000), +32%, Day 71
5 Django Unchained (Sony) ¥33 million ($360,000), 0, Day 2
6 Brain Man (Toho) ¥27 million ($295,000), -32%, Day 22
7 Life of Pi (Fox) ¥24 million ($260,000), -13%, Day 37
8 A Certain Magical Index (Warner Bros.) ¥20 million ($220,000), -64%, Day 8
9 Strawberry Night (Toho) ¥17 million ($185,000), -49%, Day 36
10 Zero Dark Thirty (Gaga) ¥12 million ($130,000), -44%, Day 15

-Flight is doing pretty well and will probably bump off Die Hard 5 to debut in 1st place for the weekend.

-Django Unchained... eh, not bad considering the low theater count, but I thought it could have done a little better. The opening will however been down at least 40% compared to Inglourious Bastards.

-Les Miserables Posted Image is increasing again, and this time by a LOT thanks to it's Oscar wins. The film has easily succeeded at having 11-consecutive weeks in the Top 5. And the fact that it's going to earn over ¥100 million ($1.1/1.2 million) in it's 11th weekend is incredible. To put the number into a comparison, The Avengers grossed just slightly more in it's 11th weekend in the US.

-Life of Pi is looking at it's best hold to date thanks to the Oscars. And while it's not benefiting nearly as well much as Les Mis, it's still impressive.

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) - 10
Monsters, Inc. (2002) - 10
Saving Private Ryan (1998) - 10

Saturday's estimate locks up an amazing 11-consecutive week for Les Mis in the Top 5, but can it do 12? Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum and Oz: The Great and Powerful will make it very difficult next weekend, and it'll need to overtake either Ted or Die Hard 5 to do it, but it's possible not being too far below them already this weekend.

From Corpse as usual

Weekend Ranking (03/02-03)

1 (-) Flight (Paramount) NEW
2 (1) A Good Day to Die Hard (Fox) Week 3
3 (2) Ted (Toho-Towa) Week 7
4 (5) Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) Week 11
5 (-) Django Unchained (Sony) NEW
6 (4) Brain Man (Toho) Week 4
7 (3) A Certain Magical Index (Warner Bros.) Week 2
8 (9) Life of Pi (Fox) Week 6
9 (6) Strawberry Night (Toho) Week 6
10 (29) Argo (Disney) Week 19
11 (8) Zero Dark Thirty (Gaga) Week 3

Washington's latest film Flight debuted on 321 screens to 129,920 admissions and earned ¥156,322,250 ($1.69 million) over the weekend. Since opening on Friday, it has sold 199,358 admissions and grossed ¥225,962,750 ($2.43 million).

Django Unchained managed a Top 5 debut on only 148 screens, but took it a mediocre ¥63,532,700 ($684,000) on 50,123 admissions for the weekend. It also opened on Friday, bringing it's 3-day total to ¥92,309,900($995,000) on 77,998 admissions. This weak showing isn't too surprising considering that except for the Kill Bill films, Tarantino has never been successful in the market.

Very nice for Argo.
It added 109 theaters (up from only 7 before this weekend). It was very well-received last October (even nominated for Best Foreign Film), but it's box office was really weak despite this never playing on more than 115 screens and failed to rank in the Top 10 even once. This second run thanks to winning Best Picture, while it won't be very much, could match it's first run.

And now that the slow period is finally over, we have a big showdown between 2013's (calendar year) first major releases: Oz: The Great and Powerful playing in 329 theaters (on 582 screens) and Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum playing in 342 theaters, this upcoming weekend opening before Spring Break.

¥5.27 billion ($59.31 million)  Les Miserables

¥3.63 billion ($40.30 million)  Ted

¥2.82 billion ($32.35 million)  007: Skyfall

¥1.80 billion ($20.76 million)  Life of Pi

Les Mis increased week-on-week by 17% following it's Oscar wins. It's now only ¥120 million away from becoming the highest-grossing imported-film since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

Ted remains a beast and is actually going to reach ¥4 billion ($45 million). It has been adding screens every single week ever since it opened, but it's legs are still mighty impressive.

1 (-) Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥510 million ($5.5 million) NEW [342 theaters]
2 (-) Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) ¥305 million ($3.3 million) NEW [329 theaters]
3 (1) Flight (Paramount) ¥110 million ($1.2 million) Week 2
4 (2) A Good Day to Die Hard (Fox) ¥95 million ($1.1 million) Week 4
5 (3) Ted (Toho-Towa) ¥90 million ($1 million) Week 8

9 (8) Life of Pi (Fox) ¥30 million ($325,000) Week 7
10 (9) Strawberry Night (Toho) ¥25 million ($270,000) Week 7

The 33rd installment in the Doraemon movie franchise is handily winning Saturday's morning and afternoon showings at the usual locations and will have no problem winning the weekend, especially in admissions. The franchise will also reach a monumental milestone as early as next week: surpassing 100 million admissions to become the most attended movie franchise in history by overtaking Godzilla.

Every March except one has seen a new Doraemon film release since 1980 and they almost always dominate the children/family demo all month going into Spring Break, so opening Oz here probably wasn't the best idea. Oz would have benefited much better in late-April to take advantage of the Golden Week holidays in the same way Alice in Wonderland and others have in the past.

Projected Totals (¥1 billion+) after Sunday:
-Les Miserables: ¥5.4 billion ($61 million) after twelve weeks.
-Ted: ¥3.8 billion ($42 million) after eight weeks.
-Strawberry Night: ¥2.05 billion ($23 million) after seven weeks.
-Life of Pi: ¥1.85 billion ($21 million) after seven weeks.
-Die Hard 5: ¥1.8 billion ($20 million) after four weeks.
-Brain Man: ¥1.1 billion ($13 million) after five weeks.
