JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

What do you think is the cause of this increase?

I don't have correct answer but I think it's because Conan was able to expand it's fanbase here. Thanks to its continuous airing of new season + manga. Conan films are usually frontloaded, and earn mostly in the Golden Week. After Golden Week, it's now depended on audience repeated views + future expansion across formats. Though, I honestly like Conan 2022 over Conan 2021 but Conan 2022 still couldn't defeat Conan 2021 (likely because last year had a rush audience across rural locations, though, usual locations where trending worst)

But, still what matters most here is that it's increasing rather than staying stable like Shin Chan (¥1.5B-¥2.0B) or decreasing Doraemon < Pokemon < Yokai Watch.

Overseas fans often says that quality being degrading. One such horrible example is the OW of Detective Conan The Scarlet Bullet in Mainland China where Sunday has fallen by 70% of OD (2-days Opening Weekend), Though, it has recorded the fastest Japanese Film to exceed ¥100M in China in two days, only to end with ¥216M there.

Shin Ultraman Dailies (Est.)

D1 : 05/13 : ¥290M

D2 : 05/14 : ¥400M

Total Until 05/14 : ¥690M

It will break Ultraman's Franchise record (¥838M) tomorrow. Is ¥1000M OW possible?

How is the reception?

Ultraman is a very big part of the childhood of a lot of folks in my region - so I am rally for it.

Miss thoses times where Ultramen and Kaiju were actual stunt people dressed up in rubber suits, and cities / traffic were built from models - where there were not much CGI.

4.2 :「MOVIE WALKER」(link)

3.8 :「Filmarks」(link)

3.8 :「Yahoo Movie (Y! 映画)」(link)

3.7 :「Eiga.com (映画.com) 」(link)

The series started in 1967, with ATG of Franchise untouched since 2008 (made by Superior Ultraman 8 Brothers : ¥838M) Ratings isn't that favourable (I mean ok) but interestingly, it has reached many casual audience, as 2020 Ultraman Movie made only ¥150M. I would say that "Shin Ultraman" is a great success, thanks to Anno &Nishijima

Been hearing some debate over this in some spaces so I'm curious how you'd judge it in your opinion, is Ultraman bigger than Godzilla popularity wise in Japan or is Godzilla bigger? Or are they at the same level popularity wise? Thanks.

Let's see which came first.

Godzilla started in 1954, where as Ultraman started in 1967.

First Godzilla Movie made ¥183M (Rental) with 9.61M attendees. ATG was ¥3.648B made by 1964 Mothra vs. Godzilla (including re-releases until 1980s (Original Run was ¥675M)) Later, this record was broken by Shin Godzilla (2016) made ¥8.25B (previous *known* Godzilla Movie made ¥1.26B in 2004, So, you can see how big was the increase (¥6.99B)) I don't have accurate BO Numbers before 1980s but 34 Godzilla Movie sold upto 110M tickets in Japan. Later, Godzilla Movie after "Shin Godzilla" made less than ¥400M.

Now, let's see Ultraman first known movie was started on 1971, before that other film were compilation. From, the very start, this franchise was not a franchise that works on theatres. The nominal range was ¥100M-¥600M, only 2008 Ultraman movie was able to crossed ¥600M with ¥838M. Never had ¥1B in entire franchise, only to broken by Shin Ultraman (2022) in 3-days. The increase was incredible and I am really surprised that how did this film reached so many audience when 2020 Ultraman made only ¥150M. The only reason was because Ultraman franchise at Theatres was fan-driven.

Popularity wise Ultraman is ahead of Godzilla, but if you talk about Box Office then, it's Godzilla, In fact, I am a fan of Godzilla haha. In TV, I am a fan of Ultraman

Recent success, on Shin Ultraman was because of Anno (Eva's Director) &Nishijima (Drive My Car's actor). I think this one should reach ¥5B. Interesting Thing is that "Shin" word has attributes a lot of success here like "Shin Godzilla" (¥8.25B), "Shin Evangelion" (¥10.28B).

Next "Shin Kamen Rider" will be interesting to track, it stands between "Godzilla" &"Ultraman"

That seems pretty good for the Quintuplets, reeeeeally hope I get to see that somehow here in the UK 😅

Maybe if Crunchyroll buys the rights... Because if this summer in Italy we'll see Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and Dragon Ball Super Hero it's only thanks to them, then maybe the situation in UK is better...

Mission Impossible Series (Japan)

#1 M.I. 2000 : ¥9.70B ($94.10M)

#2 M.I. 1996 : ¥6.12B ($53.99M)

#3 M.I. 2011 : ¥5.38B ($69.69M)

#4 M.I. 2006 : ¥5.15B ($44.37M)

#5 M.I. 2015 : ¥5.14B ($42.09M)

#6 M.I. 2018 : ¥4.72B ($42.44M)

Except for "M.I. 2018", Japan has being No.1 market in Asia [If we exclude Mainland China] So, "M.I. 2023" should be above ¥4.00B, could reach ¥5.00B. But, I want E.R. to recover soon for better numbers in USD. (Per C.E.R., ¥4.00B/$31.49M &¥5.00B/$39.11M)

Note: All USD value are taken from BOM.

I doubt might be a limited 3-days release like My Hero Academia: World's Heroes Mission or SAO Progressive Aria Of Starless Night for both UK and Italy. Exceptional will be looked only if it breaks ¥2.0B here like Violet Evergarden (2020)

This time, I want Italy to give us more than €2M for Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0. 🥺

If it gets a theatrical release in the UK, it'll probably be as small as it was for the Konosuba movie (I want season 3 already), I'm expecting it to just go straight to Crunchyroll or whatever streamer if it gets any form of UK release
