JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

I doubt might be a limited 3-days release like My Hero Academia: World's Heroes Mission or SAO Progressive Aria Of Starless Night for both UK and Italy. Exceptional will be looked only if it breaks ¥2.0B here like Violet Evergarden (2020)

This time, I want Italy to give us more than €2M for Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0. 🥺

Ah I was thinking that 700/800k would already have been a good result 😅, 1M maybe for Dragon Ball

I would really like to be more optimist but in May we already have the same climate as we had in other years in July, and for the box office it has truly disastrous effects (and add the fact that theaters still have more stringent masks rules than hospitals and retirement homes...)

@Issac Newton Issac, how much has JJK0 made globally until now?

Thanks.

Somewhere around $205M-$210M Globally

Almost drying up now in all markets. Last WKend, it opened in Portugal ($92K), this WKend, it will opened in Spain.

Internationally, defeated Demon Slayer in all markets except in Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong in Asia, Highest Grossing Japanese Film in Continent of Africa ($200K)

In LATAM, defeated Demon Slayer ($5M) in all markets except Mexico, but far behind Dragon Ball Super Broly ($37.23M). [JJK : $6M]

In Europe, defeated Demon Slayer in all markets, except in France.

In Middle East, defeated Demon Slayer in all market except Saudi Arabia [I don't have access to Saudi Arabia Box Office so I need verification] In Egypt, it grossed more than 3x of Demon Slayer in OW.

Truly an incredible run !!

That's a lot of words and comparisons to basically say it outperformed DS in countries that were under restrictions when DS opened and failed to replicate that in almost every place where that wasn't the case, kind of a pointless comparison imo (also left out markets i.e. DOM and australia/new zealand). DS DOM+kr+taiwan alone is higher than all of JJK international markets combined (-Japan of course).

That said JJK0 looks like it will manage to break the #14 mark in time before it stops playing thanks to some pretty good continous weekly increases since they announced the end of the run, so I guess it paid off pretty well for them to announce that.  Great performance overall.

I wasn't comparing that hard with Demon Slayer but as far as I can say that I can't comp with release like Belle or SAO or MHA 2021 as they didn't receive general release in maximum territories (mainly LATAM, Africa &Middle East) [limited to fan-screening, Film Festival, or 3-days release] Hopefully, there comes Conan, with which region I will compare, no America releases, no European release except France and Spain. China release can't be compare. At last, I am left with Broly and Demon Slayer.

Speaking in the UK, Demon Slayer and JJK0 are the only anime movies in the last last few years at my local cinema that played both longer than a single week, and more than a single showing per day. Original movies are lucky to get a single night of showings, and even luckier to get a full week once per day.

My local chain is probably the worst one here at supporting anime though, I managed to find a cinema in London at the start of May that was still showing JJK0, while Belle had a long life in other chains

Top Gun: Maverick : ¥350M ($2.76M) *Est*

Easily the biggest OD for Tom Cruise

For COMPS

#1 M.I. 2018 : ¥228,889,600 ($2.10M) / 169,192 attendees

#2 M.I. 2015 : ¥183,703,100 ($1.47M) / 142,719 attendees

Crazy, is there any big local film that will release before JWD that will prevent this to go >40m ?

In Compare to Top Gun (1986)

OW¥447,430,600 (108 locations) [2-days]

Ending with ¥6.643B [incl. re-release it's ¥6.70B]. making it the 5th Highest Grossing Hollywood Film of that time.

Is Dragon Ball Super even shaping up to be that big? Feels pretty muted right now

Pretty much agree with you.

June has no possible big opener other than Dragon Ball. July will be big, starting with Lightyear (07/01), Minion 2 (07/15), Kingdom 2 (07/15), Jurassic World 3 (07/29). August will start with One Piece: Red (08/06). So, these are the possible ¥1.0B Opener.

So, Top Gun: Maverick should take all the advantages. It's incredible that Tom Cruise delivered what Hollywood works has been missing since pandemic.

On the side note, Mission Impossible II still maintain OP (Sat-Sun) record of Tom Cruise (¥900M). Including the preliminary screenings, it's ¥1.390B. So, Let's see how close or will it defeat his career peak record or not.

Or else, it will be the biggest "Friday" Opening of Tom Cruise [rather than more other records]
