Jonwo
In recent years, the Western genre has had mixed success from hits like True Grit to flops like Cowboys and Aliens. With two Westerns coming out in the next year or so with Django Unchained and The Lone Ranger, I wonder if the genre can successfully become mainstream again. rockNrollaDIM
If the ratings for that new History Channel mini series are any indication than YES. Holy hell.
Jonwo
That's what gave me inspiration for the thread , it's clear the genre still has appeal in America but it doesn't translate well overseas where the real money is made at the box office. True Grit for example did $171m in America but $80m overseas, still a success considering the budget was $38m.
Impact
I hope so, granted it wont be as big as the hey day in the 40s/50s but it should come back.BTW-films about American history just don't do well OS. Such as some films about other cultures wont do well here. But yes, Lone Ranger should be HUGE!

Plain Old Tele
Thing is they felt like they had to PC the western.Really? If anything westerns these days are far more realistic than the classics.
pinocchio
The last big comeback of Western movies happened 50 years ago when they dominated TV with Bonanza, Big Valley and so on.The genre will never come back. Maybe a hit like Django Unchained or Unforgiven from time to time, but that's it.
Lordmandeep
Yeah Sergio Leone films about the west are still the best and very popular.Play the theme from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and everyone recognizes it.
Thrylos 7
Actually the western movies were very popular in Europe in the sixties , the spaghetti westerns that is , which are vastly superior than the american ones anyway (and not just the Leone films, there's a ton of kick ass spaghetti westerns) . It's these films that tatarantino is trying to emulate with Django (and he did that with inglorious basterds too, even though this wan't a western )
Cedarpoint1111
Not to mention Dallas is coming back on the air this summer. Should be a nice sized hit for TNT.

In Germany the Winnetou movies based on Karl Mays novels dominated the market for years with insane admission numbers.See how big western TV series have been in the USA:http://www.classictv...atings/1960.htmGunsmoke and Bonanza both were number one TV shows. (Like American Idol today.)
