This is the one time I hate China for being so big. I liked The Hobbit but its going to pass $1B WW thanks to China, and I didn't want it to pass it

 

Feel the same. Glad it bombed in China but not enough to prevent it from crossing $1 billion. I sincerely hope that Floppit movies with the Wrinkled Katniss Rip Off fail to hit $ 1 billion. I`m disgusted what a shameless Katniss rip off that stupid character is. She`s even hooked up with a dwarf because movie Katniss is also hooked up with a dwarf (as played by Josh Hutcherson).

True but has not the expansion of foreign markets such as china and russia led to bigger OS totals for big franchise films this has also helped films break the $1B mark. There have been several a year in 2012 and 2011 but this year we could struggle to get 2.

 

That could have been said last year, very few people expected Avengers and Skyfall to pass 1B. I wouldn't be shocked if some films no one is predicting a billion for now end up making it.

CF will need to at least stay flat AND DOUBLE it's OS gross from THG. A big ask but I not impossible i guess.

With hindsight you could always give good reasons as to why films made what they did, but if you look at the first couple of pages on their OS thread, no one was predicting anywhere near what they got.

If at the end of the year we have 7 films make a billion, I imagine people will be saying:

 

The Hobbit: previous film made over 1B, expected.

 

Iron Man 3: Iron Man was The main character in the 1.5B Avenger, so this was always going to make a billion.

 

HG CF: After the book sales exploded OS it was supposed to make a billion.

 

OZ: This looked like a better version of Alice, so if that made a billion, then this was always going to make a billion.

 

FF6: After the great WOM of the previous film and the great trailer this was bound to make a billion.

 

STiD: This film looked like an epic disaster film more than another Star Trek, and OS audiences eat that stuff up.

 

Monsters University: the previous film was a classic, and after Toy Story 3 did it, it would have been surprising if MU didn't make a billion.

No. Just no. I can't think of anyone who saw Skyfall making $1B WW. That was a true box office shocker.

Ha, Ha.. NO.  I mean seriously Trek.  I am a huge huge Trek fan back from 1966 and Trek would be lucky to get 250 overseas.  If it did 350, that would be utterly surprising.

I agree with you. Seeing how often we have movies over a billion, people think every n-part of a franchise will reach it, and that is, at very least, audacious... We are having a OS explosion and that is undeniable, but it is not as easy to reach good numbers everywhere. IMHO, each billion movie needs an extreme data somewhere to reach that. Avengers worked extremely well in Asia and America and passed the billion widely, but Skyfall has needed a monstrous amount in UK, Germany and Scandinavia, TDKR had a DOM and UK superb numbers. Hobbit has Germany's (the biggest amount in $ since Avatar)... and if you analyze the rest of cases (excepting Avatar and Titanic, which were monsters everywhere), each billionaire movie needed one or two special local cases.

 

We have to analyze case by case for 2013 movies, but I think we will be lucky if we have 2 billion movies. I can be wrong, but for the moment I only see TH2 with real options (and even this case if far from locked).
