How come no one like Justin Lin anymore? Such Asian representation and no one cares :sadben:

you mean in Korea or in general worldwide? I think you meant the latter but if I may, at least in Korea, Justin Lin isn't taken as Asian representation, not to mention that Lin's not the most well-known, established name, and most of the Koreans don't believe they need to be represented in the distinctive, Asian context since Korea by its people is perceived as a culturally "homogenous" society that stands on its own opposed to the multicultural counterparts in the west. That is, the alpha and the norm here is rather "Korean" (not even Asian) than "white", thus people here wouldn't just praise the name of Lin and support him by go watching his movies because he's representing Asia in Hollywood. If he were a Korean director than it would've been a little different. People get more heated about east asian nationalism and rivalries then the issues of race and ethnicity.

and when it comes to Star Trek it's just the lack of appeal of the franchise and the SF genre as a whole in Korea. Even Star Wars is much more of a niche thing than a popular franchise.

I've been thinking about it only to conclude that Koreans are not that big fans of fictions that are too rich in details and freely derived from the sense of reality. People here seem to get a little intimidated and somewhat uncomfortable by elaborate fantasies and imagination. It always needs to be in touch of reality of the real world or include some social commentaries.

Thank you for the write up. To be honest, I know Lin isn't one of the big name directors like a Spielberg/Cameron/Bay/Nolan/maybe JJ Abrams so I don't think the public really cares much outside those 5 (And it's debatable even then, considering the BFG's performance). I was kinda half joking. I realize the truth.

I also realize it's not Asian people's obligation (I'm Vietnamese) to just blindly support any Asian director in Hollywood, but ultimately, this isn't a Lin problem, for good or bad, Star Trek is disappointing across the world and it definitely appears to be a brand limitation combined with bad timing.

oh yeah I wasn't implying that you believed that either, to clarify. and yeah, it's kinda sad cause I really liked it too and it was a good movie. deserved to do much better. and I honestly believe as a movie itself it paved the way for at least two to three more movies from the franchise. Kirk has matured so much and the team's chemistry is just so good together. :(

btw @Rsyu are you gonna see the Train to Busan prequel, Seoul Station?

wonder how much it'll be benefitted from the TTB's mega success despite it itself being an indie animation.

Haha yeah, I'm trying to figure out which film to watch since I'm short on time. Tunnel I'm definitely watching, and I might go for star trek beyond too.

So GB just opened today and I thought it would do at least SPY numbers (2M adm) with no competition and turned out it's just simply getting NO LOVE at all.... which is seriously baffling.

Like the biggest cinema chain my town has FOUR showings for it on SATURDAY! and two of them in the early morning or at super late night like 9AM or 2AM!

Really wanted it to be somewhat successful..

Technically, Seoul Station has little connection with Train To Busan. It's not a prequel but just another Zombie feature from same filmmaker.

Personally I liked Seoul Station. Some technological limitations like crude design and unripe voice acting may bother many audiences.

But its latter half is relentlessly scathing. Especially the model house scene is a riot to me.

I saw Train to Busan today. It was definitely very entertaining and engaging. Though the story does not have any twist, I thought it was emotional and so well made.

Folks from SK, can you recommend good thrillers from korea. I definitely want to watch more korean movies after this one.

-Memories of a Murder

-I Saw the Devil

-The Chaser

-The Yellow Sea

-Man from Nowhere

-Oldboy
