Rsyu
Good hold for Homecoming, I think it will hold pretty well against Dunkirk, at least on the weekends, before A battleship Island hits the theaters on week 4

juni78ukr
Flipped was released in US in 2010. Here in Russia and Ukraine it was released in 2011 on DVD. And now in 2017 it grossed nearly $1 mln in South Korea.
Rsyu
Flipped never got an official release in Korea but due to popular demand by moviegoers and the fact that it was extremely well received (it holds a 9.23/10.0 score on Naver) it managed to secure a release date from Lottecinema this year. I think it was a nice gesture towards the GA.

titanic2187
people are screaming when SMH are dropping harsh 60% in domestic thread, perhaps this thread, they could find that how good was the SMH's WOM 45% drop is phenomenal, no way to deny it, it's outperform than in USA given the market context.

War of the Planet of the Apes' staggered release dates internationally is benefitting Homecoming - Homecoming literally has 2 weekends to itself in many regions. So i don't really think its about WoM being good, just nothing else to watch to be very honest.

To be fair, Apes isn't really exploding in USA.....and Apes isn't a huge competitor for SMH at international level neither....SMH won over it with hand down

keysersoze123
@Rsyu, how big dunkirk can be? I am hoping for at least 1m+ OW admissions and a leggy run to at least 4m total.

I am hoping for at least 1m+ OW admissions and a leggy run to at least 4m total. I'm a little pessimistic to be honest. Its presales while not stellar, are relatively on par with Dawn of the planet of the apes. A similar opening should give it an OW in the range of 1.2-1.5M admissions which isn't that bad. But there's also uncertainty about how much the film will resonate among the GA, given the fact that war films about the allied forces have never done decent numbers here. Although I'll admit, there haven't been many standout blockbusters of that fare in recent years so it's not quite so cut and dried. In regard to its legs, it has Battleship Island dropping down in week two and A Taxi driver in its third week of release..so pretty damning competition to put it mildly. I'm inclined to think that regardless of the quality, it could get muscled out of screens and showtimes and legs will suffer as a result. Basically, the only thing this has going for it, besides its quality as a film, is the Nolan name behind it. After Interstellar, it would be foolish to underestimate that but yeah, realistically I don't think it will be enough. 3M admission finish would be great for it I think. Rsyu
Some snippets from critic reviews for Dunkirk in Korea "Nolan, who has shown an ingenious and thorough understanding and grasp of time through previous films Memento, Inception, and Interstellar, here in his first attempt at a historical genre film manages to juxtapose three time planes expertly in a way to maintain a heightened sense of suspense" [positive] "The film conveys a sense of being in the moment in an impressive way but falls short of inspiring emotions" [mixed-to-negative] "The film is cold and dark, but the message it conveys burns bright. By portraying a person in crisis struggling with an ethical dilemma, it leaves us a lot to ponder on"[positive] "The greatest spectacle in Dunkirk, a film that aspires for perfection in plot, cinematography, score, and acting, is the bravery and dedication shown by countless people to save the lives of other over their own"[positive] "Three strengths and weaknesses of Dunkirk" -Strengths You get a real sense of being in the moment, much like you would in a documentary. The story progresses in a mutli-dimensional fashion through earth, sea, and sky The music heightens the suspense and strengthens parts of the film that may otherwise have been somewhat dull. -Weaknesses Zero scenes of close combat in a war film lessens the impact of suffering the soldiers go through Lack of standout protagonists make it difficult for the audience to invest themselves in the film There are no thematic devices such as a humanistic story to make the audiences cry, or a climax that stirs the emotion. Nolan wants the audience to see the film in their own perspective and not the perspective of the director, which makes it a masterful film, but not one that will be popular to the general audience.
