Man of Steel thread OS

Recommended Posts

I said 500-520 million even if the film is spectacular! And the reason I said that because reboots just don't tend to break records.Consider this out of all the following reboots; casino royal, star trek 09, BB, ASM, incredible hulk, rise of planet of the apes only spiderman broke the 700 mill mark and thats due to the brand's popularity internationally. Man of steel 630 mill and counting was quite a surprise to me since the film was good not great while casino royal was brilliant IMO yet it just missed the 600 mill mark while BB and star trek were universally acclaimed and neither were able to crack the 400 mark.

Could MOS have done better? absolutely! if it was better received it would've likely broke the 700 mill mark but it's final tally of 650-660 mill is a true victory for a reboot coming on the heels of SR. This film is the highest grossing reboot domestically and the second highest grossing reboot WW.

Agree. And I'm sick of people comparing the WW number of MOS to TASM. Spiderman was the most popular SH OS while Superman never broke out anywhere outside the US (just look at the number of SM3 and SR for comparison). The only negative thing about MOS BO run was with a better critical reception it could make more.

Superman is the most well-known. Different from most-beloved which belongs to Spider-man IMO.

The fact that a superman film is reaching anywhere near 650+m is freakin' great, especially for a reboot.

I said IM+3D should be the high end goal... it so happens to do that so it's a success

I said about 600-650 at first. But at the end, trailers made me to up it to 800... :(

Yeh i know the trailers where absolutely amazing best of the year i think by a mile 2nd and 3rd one's in particular. If film was as good as the trailers it may have had a shot at a billion lol.

Man of Steel did very well in some countries but very poorly in others.  It is interesting to see.that kind of disparity.

Did very well in UK & very good in Australia & France.

But Germany & Russia completely ignored the movie.

Mexico & Brazil which are very receptive to superhero

movies are not too hot too. The biggest surprise is still

China. At $63M it is the largest overseas gross from

a single country. WB should really take note.

MOS opened HUGE in mexico but the drop offs were also huge, still 21 million ain't too shabby! Brazil makes sense considering the late release date and more importantly the cancellation of the promotional tour due to the political troubles in the country, still the film is doing alright there (already over 11 million and might actually double SR's numbers of 17mill, which would be awesome!)

Totally agree with you about Russia and Germany; the Russia numbers make sense since superman is such an american icon but I really don't understand why Germany hates the character so much, does he remind them on hilter's idea of the ubermitch?

Nobody is going to see a film just because some minor actor with a supporting role in the film happens to be from your country.

no, it is not.

The only thing "freaking great" about MOS box office, was DOM OW and China gross.

Stop twisting reality, 650 + M for MOS is great, why? Superman Returns barely did 360 M, this made 300 M more, one of the biggest reboots ever, it is fantastic, simple as that.

It's did better than SR, but that doesn't make it excellent, it's just OK. A Superman film should be aiming for the upper end of superhero films, and this clearly isn't doing that.

I think that people calling it OK do that based on how it behaved, how it got to its numbers. It opened big in many countries and dropped very fast (like 2nd week) in those countries.

Basicly, based on its respective OW revenues in many markets, it was on track to maybe $800M worldwide.  It lost steam fast in a lot of markets, not just the domestic one... which is a real problem when a product has so much volatlity in so many markets..

That's why i think people call it OK based on the high potential it showed early on, on its opening and the disappointed results translated by the consequent massive drops in many markets.

It's like this movie opened abnormaly huge (an excessive rush factor) and then right after that behaved much lower like it was never supposed to open that huge to start with or like it was two different movies, one opening like a potential juggernaut or blockbuster, then a second one (after weekend 2 or even after a few days in certain markets) behaving like a successful non blockbuster movie, with much lower revenues...this  again, in many markets, not just the domestic one.

That's why i think, some people call its results decent.

Ridiculous, SR did 360 M, MOS 650 +, it is a big success, there's no spinning that.

Superman used to be a massive franchise, the original film was in the top 10 of all time when it released, this years Superman will barely make half of an Iron Man film.

The year SR was released, an FF film was released and didn't even come close to making half as much as SR. This years FF will comfortably pass MOS. That's excellence.

To be called excellent, a film should perform above and beyond what it should have done, a Superman film being the 6-8th biggest film of the year isn't doing that.
