kayumanggi
Back to box office. It's stupidity if Paramount doesn't increase the theater count of FLIGHT next week.
ecstasy
And how many of them were guaranteed to be BO hits, regardless of his involvement? You really are not going to win this argument. None were guaranteed Box Office hits. The guy is a draw whether you like him or not.

John Marston
Pursuit of Happiness was not a guaranteed hit. I Am Legend was not a guaranteed hit (how many zombie movie have grossed over 500m worldwide?). How many people were expecting Hancock, a movie about a drunk superhero that wasn't based on a comic , to outgross Superman and X-men movies? riczhang
I can ask the same thing regarding Washington's films.Yes, you can. And you've just proven my point. True Draws don't happen anymore.

True Draws don't happen anymore.ha ha ha, never seen such a determination to pretend that Smith isn't a draw when everyone and their mother knows that he is. What is the problem here?
kayumanggi
Smith is a draw. Lol, even his son has two 160 M plus films under his belt.

How many people were expecting Hancock, a movie about a drunk superhero that wasn't based on a comic , to outgross Superman and X-men movies?Stars don't make the movies anymore. Every movie has good buzz, and anticipation before it opens. It's called marketing. People don't go to movies because they're favourite star is in it, at least in the US. Overseas is probably different, especially in Asia, where people still love their stars, and 3D. (*cough*Salt, and Every 3D movie under the sun*cough* ) They go to movies because the marketing or genre, or quality interests them. The movies did well because they were good, not because Smith was in them. He may have contributed to the movie being good, and he often does, without him something like Hancock probably wouldn't have been as good, but that doesn't mean that people went to see Hancock to see Will Smith. They go to see the movie because the story interests them, or whatever people see in the Transformers movies, not the stars.
lab276
Smith is a draw. Lol, even his son has two 160 M plus films under his belt. One of which was about Will Smith and the other was a remake of a popular 80s film. Hardly what I'd call drawing power. lab276
True. They are still under his resume anyway the way the LOTR and POTC films are under Bloom's.Yes, but no one thinks of those as Bloom's films do they?
kayumanggi
The fact that true box office draws don't exist anymore, because the market's changed now.So studios can recast leads anytime and just promise a great marketing? People still go to movies because of the actors they care about.

tonytr87
Both Smith and Washington are box office draws, Smith moreso though. Yes, box office draws don't really happen anymore, but Smith and Washington are two of the few left. They're both great actors and people love to watch them. Whoever is still trying to argue that Smith can't act in dramatic roles is an idiot.

AniNate
I can't see a film like Safe House grossing $126 million without Denzel. He's definitely still a draw on his own.
FilmBuff
I don't buy that "stars don't make movies" crap for even a second. Not when you have a proven track of big box office stars like Tom Hanks, Will Smith, Sandra Bullock, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Robert Downey Jr, Johnny Depp and many more.
