Cynosure
furious 7 grossed $390m in china and monster hunt has earned only $380m. why are u saying monster hunt has crossed furious 7? MH is now ahead in domestic currency. In recent weeks a dollar has gone from about 6.21 yuan to 6.37 yuan as the Chinese government tries to lower the value of its currency to boost exports. This means more yuans are required for a similar dollar gross.
KP1025
Why does it matter how much USD Monster Hunt has grossed? It is a local film, so it doesn't need to exchange its earnings into USD like Hollywood films. I don't see how it is relevant for the title of highest grossing film in China. MinaTakla
Minions OD looks way under 200m. So, no way it gets close to MI5 in total. If MI5 doesn't cross 150m and Minions doesn't cross 100-120m then both films would have been disappointing at the Chinese BO And I think this really reduces chances for IO, Ice Age 5 and similar Hollywood films thought to be big at the BO soon Even Panda with the Mermaid release date might not be the crazy $$$ grosser it is thought to be. If MI5 couldn't cross 200m then people need to re-think their estimates I think
A Marvel Fanboy
For MI5, if it were MI4-style entertainming, it would have easily cleared $200m. For Minions, high quality piracy must have hurt it, plus it is still more than doubling DM2's China gross, which is good. Both are releasing in September, traditionally a slow season for box office. Point is, 2015 was always going to a small (comparatively) year for Hollywood in China. The share of total foreign gross in 2015 looks to be around 36~39% (sub 17B/44B), likely the lowest ever in history. (2008 the lowest at 38.1%). 2016 could go up to 40% I think. Agree with u..minions HD quality already came out..and mi5, it was a great movie but it changes its tone a bit frm mi4. It's still gonna be a hit in china but it could've made a lot more. picores
I dont get it. Its not like MI4 being a CGI fest. I think the tone of MI4 and MI5 is very similar. Edited September 13, 2015 by picores

People maybe don't want to admit that MI5's BO run in China IS indeed disappointing if it doesn't cross 170m. People here expected it to cross 200m let alone 220-250. And if Minions doesn't cross 100m it will also be disappointing. Same with Panda next year, if it doesn't cross 300m it will be a disappointment. MrFanaticGuy34
They should have released MI5 & Minions earlier,...just for better legs & grosses.....Shame on you, China! Edited September 13, 2015 by MrFanaticGuy34
terrestrial
I think people should stop to always set 'highest possible' as the new minimum expectaion. O.K., in theory some are possible, some might even get surpassed, but stop those to set those as minimum expectation Plus they really should start to look at the 'also released' in a time-near window plus which release day and so on. edit: typos Edited September 13, 2015 by terrestrial

The Dark Alfred
Saying that 170m is disappointing for MI5 is ridiculous. It's doing great business, maybe expecting AoU and JW numbers were too optimistic.
peludo
Attrocious numbers.. 6x(135-150) means 810-900 million Yuan, what is about 130-145 million $. How the hell is that amount atrocious when DM2 did barely $50m just 1 year and a half ago? Another thing is if we have bloated the expectations, but objectively it is a good number. Second biggest animated film ever in China.
