MinaTakla
Whatever money Universal loses on marketing Minions in China (and I doubt it), it will have earned already with the huge grosses of Minions (1.1 billion). So am not worried about their spending on the film one bit. Their advertising partners also spent a lot on advertising outside China so everyone should be happy since the film is the second highest animated film of all time and 10th all time. TalismanRing
There should be a new lesson for future Hollywood zeitgeist-blockbusters. Never release way too late in China....otherwise piracy will hurt it there. And never pick bad release slots, where it has no chance to make money there. Hollywood isn't the one making the scheduling or with the power of choice . Unless there's bribery involved.
MinaTakla
GLOBAL BOX OFFICE REPORT Minions outpaced Rogue Nation earning $19.5 million from ~124,000 weekend screenings for an 8-day total of $50.2 million.... The "Little Yellow People" -- a translation from the film's Chinese title -- passed Frozenthis weekend in local currency and will overtake Despicable Me 2 on Tuesday to become the #8 highest-grossing animated title on the Mainland. Both Minions and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation are performing under pre-release expectations mostly due to the fact audiences in third and fourth tier cities aren't as receptive as in the big international cities of Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. The Chinese heartland is where blockbusters are made and this year's hits Furious 7, Ultron, Jurassic World all managed to find that demographic. Gokai Red
It's just that China now allows for these movies to reach mega grosses and allows for 4 (and maybe as many as 6) movies to rotate in and out of the Top 10 all time in one year. Yes, and that's what make life worth living for a box office fan. Remember when Harry Potter DH2 was released in 2011? Now we get those 3 times a year. It's like christmas every day for a box office tracker.
Gokai Red
^ Exactly. I was looking through some old numbers and rankings just to put things into perspective. In 2007 the year ended with AWE, OOTP and SM3 as ranked 5th, 6th, and 10th all time, which was quite the impressive feat. Then 2010 did the same thing with TS3, AIW and DH1 being ranked 5th, 6th and 10th. 2011 came by and we get DH2, DOTM and OST ending the year ranked 3rd, 4th, and 8th, which I thought would probably be the best a single year could do. 2012 wasn't a disappointment though, with Avengers, Skyfall and TDKR reaching 3rd, 7th, and 8th all time. Then came 2015. Right now, JW, F7 and AAOU are sitting comfortably at rank 3, 5, and 6, with Minions about to enter the Top 10. Then Spectre has a chance (I don't personally think it will, but there is a chance) of toppling Minions and then in December, The Force Awakens will almost certainly enter the top 10, meaning by the end of the year, 5 of the 11 highest grossing movies, and possibly 6 of the Top 12 will be 2015 movies. 2015 has just been far too much fun to follow as a fan of the box office, and it will be very hard for following years to top what this year has been able to accomplish.

You must not forget that domestic and much of the OS grosses in July and August (except for Minions) left the BO fans despaired, angry, frustrated or bored. And now the China grosses don't live up to the expectations. I think next year will be, if not as big, probably more fun and interesting to follow. The first half of year with KFP3, Deadool, Zoolander 2, BvS and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 will be much more enjoyable than this spring.

I suppose from simply a big numbers point of view, 2015 will be tough to beat. I had actually forgotten how bored I was during the past couple months. 2015 has been extremely feast of famine at the box office, and I would hope that the years to come have more mid-range hits. keysersoze123
As of now LiH seem to have 70% of screens. There is another opener(dont know the name as cboo google translated name is hilarious) which has 14% of screen allocation. Minions and MI5 have about 5% each. LiH will go down close to 60% but the other opener will go up as well. Misc releases will probably keep 10% and so MI5/Minions wont have more than 12-14% of screens between them. I would say MI5 is headed towards 900m finish while Minions could miss 400m !!!!! Edited September 23, 2015 by keysersoze123

A Marvel Fanboy
So I guess the chance for SW getting 200m in China is gone, over one month later than the rest of the world is too much. Judging by the trailers of SW7, $200m+ for it will be very hard, not because it will get delayed. But because it looks to be too nostalgic/old-style, more friendly to North America and other devlopped markets, but less friendly to emerging markets like China.

MinaTakla
I think, at this rate, Minions could get beat by IO. It can't be ruled out. The thing is imo the only animated films that would have made more than Minions this year or maybe ever are BH6, TMK and KFP2 which had Chinese/cultural connections so that's why I don't think Western/European films like Prince, IO and Minions will surpass that.. We'll see.s
