Is Disney still trying to make Star Wars popular in China?

Trying? I would say that over $100m is quite popular, something that SW7 already did. It is not a record figure, but a quite decent one. Maybe we should not expect the same records for the same films in different markets. US loves Star Wars and China loves Transformers.

In terms of interest, Rogue One is looking pretty bad on Chinese social media right now, especially Douban and Gewara. Thoughts on this?

Honestly both Douban and Gewara are fan-driven sites. Star Wars doesn't have a big fanbase in China hence the lack of interest in those sites. You can't find objective opinions from non-biased people from those sites. Douban especially is a mess and will downvote most local films even before release. They live to hate.

But surely it is reasonable to wait good (even better than SW7) numbers with the cast in Rogue One? And surely Disney is trying to get SW more familiar in China, just think about all the profit possibilities...

2016 Hollywood studio box office

Disney - 6,147m - 8 films

Fox - 1,928m - 5 films

W.B. - 1,632m - 5 films

Paramount - 943m - 5 films

Universal - 942m - 3 films

Sony - 401m - 3 films

Insane numbers.  They did more business than the other 5 major US studios combined (5,846)

The Force Awakens had far more interest before it was released, though.
