Halba
yeah its really average DOM. u factor 3D plus inflation, 100M these days is nothing.
Halba
playing well OS because its a 3D film and asians love their 3D.but if you factor that the grosses % that studios earn is less in china and in emerging markets like india, then its not that great...as DOM is where the greatest % share lies, and its a flop DOMso overall its mixed Edited January 8, 2013 by Halba
A Marvel Fanboy
playing well OS because its a 3D film and asians love their 3D. Not really. Pi performs great across AS and Europe. but if you factor that the grosses % that studios earn is less in china and in emerging markets like india, then its not that great...as DOM is where the greatest % share lies, and its a flop DOM so overall its mixed What ??? First, it is not a flop DOM. Then, it is one of the biggest breakout in 2012. No one saw Pi doing beyond 500M WW, just like no one saw 500M WW Ted. PS. Hollywood gets 25% from their films box office in China, better than the average they take from overal international markets actually. In EU countries, the taxes are very high, around 20% could be. So it is not exactly like what you think. Anyway, studios still get more receipts from offshore than DOM nowadays.
Olive
Flop? Not everyone expected it to gross 100M+.Decent performance in North American.Outstanding numbers from OS markets.

dezorz
but if you factor that the grosses % that studios earn is less in china and in emerging markets like india, then its not that great...as DOM is where the greatest % share lies, and its a flop DOM so overall its mixed the studios get 25 percent from Chinese gross and they are not responsible for advertising. apart from china, studios get more like 40-45 percent but they pay advertising costs (through their distribution arms) they are happy to end up with 30 percent share of gross. From these quotations we need to exclude all other expenses, foreign taxes, currency change, distribution cost, foreign legal requirements, foreign dubbing or foreign subtitles, etc... in average, china or not china, it is approx. 25 percent from the gross what studios end up with. (it is more difficult to be exact, it depends if studios distribute their own film or they distribute some elese film or studios film is distrbiuted by someone else ....) LoP made about 10M in india. it is not much, but it is a huge number for foreing film playing in india. with 500M+ possible gross LoP barely misses 2012 Worldwide Gross TOP 10 movies. although we never know how much it really earns, it is one of the few films which makes over 500M. (it is now at 400M, but it just started in europe, it will make another 100M and with oscar nominations i would not be surprised to see it outgrossing 600M) if i use that 25 percent rule for 500M gross it means approx. 125M of return. This movie basically payed itself just from theater grosses. With DVD, VOD and TVto come it will easily earn more than 50M (excluding all expenses). 50M profit from 120M investment? astonishing success! A Marvel Fanboy
624M WW for MIB3 off a 250M PB and Sony are happy to make a sequel.
A Marvel Fanboy
25% from China, Hollywood studios dont have to pay for any taxes and adverstising (though studios can also do some additional promotions if they wish). CFG pay for them. In Europe, you got 15%~20%-plus VATs.
dezorz
624M WW for MIB3 off a 250M PB and Sony are happy to make a sequel.i think mib 4 hasnt been officialy anounced yet, just a possibility.sony say it cost 215M, some other sources 300M. if later is true it might have difficulties to earn its money back even on 600M+ gross and dvd/vod/tv sales. A Marvel Fanboy
Who knows. Probably 215M is without tax rebate. Nowadays few blockbusters can break even in theaters alone. In 2012, TDKR/Hobbit/MIB3/TASM all will not break even in theaters. THG/TA sure have. Skyfall probably also will do it. And of course, LoP will do it.
