Did over $400M WW BO (was huge in China and Japan).  So it probably did make some money, not withstanding its huge budget, and its not surprising a sequel was green-lit.  Also not surprising that they took a while to decide they were willing to green-light it.

It was huge in China, not in Japan. Didn't a lot of Japanese shun it because they thought it was stealing from Evangelion (a la THG and Battle Royale)?
