  1. Hey, at least now there won't be a (theatrical) Planes 3.
  2. How to Train Your Dragon 2 also had a rabid Tumblr following pre-release. Never forget that......but seriously, that's good to know. I hope all those people actually show up. (Actually, the Tumblr fandoms for HTTYD, BH6 and GOTG have quite a bit of overlap...)
  3. ^Yes, this. As with many of these, the countless ripoffs dilute how amazing the shots in the original LOTR trilogy were. I remember seeing the trailer for Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven, and thinking about how many shots looked to be stolen straight from LOTR...
  4. I don't think Kaguya is certain, if only because the Academy has never nominated a Ghibli film that wasn't directed by Miyazaki. The only "hit and miss" to it is Ponyo not getting a nomination, and I feel that was down to how competitive and high-quality the 2009 slate was. (If Ponyo had gotten a U.S. release in 2008 or 2010 instead of 2009, I think it would have gotten nominated.)
  5. I have been waiting four years for Song of the Sea. If it's as good as The Secret of Kells, I'd be rooting for it to at least get a nomination.
  6. Seriously? Avatar is STILL playing in some theaters in Russia? I have never heard of a non-museum film being in continuous theatrical release of some kind for almost five years - even The Sound of Music eventually had all prints withdrawn after its nearly three-year theatrical run...
  7. My initial thought was actually Mutt Williams. And I just thought of Tommy Gunn from Rocky V, too...
  8. I guess they're never going to go back and fix last week's numbers, then?
  9. Screen Daily just put out a weekly China report, still seems to be based on the incomplete Entgroup numbers? They say EX3 only made $32.84M last week: http://www.screendaily.com/territories/asia-pacific/expendables-3-tops-china-box-office/5077373.article?blocktitle=LATEST-FILM-NEWS-HEADLINES&contentID=42422At this rate, I wonder if the real numbers will ever be officially reported. And will they ever get fixed on places like BOM, or will this current week look inflated due to the coming corrections being rolled into it?
  10. He may not have any room on his schedule with DC+Fast+whatever else, but I think Bay should ask Dwayne Johnson again. Also, a reality check - geeks loathe Sam Witwicky, but the GA doesn't. Lack of Shia may well have took a bite out of domestic gross - franchise fatigue, yes, but as with Pirates 4's lack of Bloom and Knightley, the characters nerddom didn't like may well have been missed by everyone else.It doesn't matter what they do, the series is not going to get the Bayless, G1-faithful reboot we all want until it dies in China.
  11. Interesting list. One correction: It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World was United Artists, not MGM.Also, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse actually predates the merger that formed MGM, it was just Metro Pictures. Not sure whether you'd still consider it MGM...
  12. Even BO.com just reports the OS weekend data from Rentrak. Rentrak also gave a $72M cume for DOTPOTA. It seems that either Rentrak got underestimated numbers, or they got data that only went up to Saturday. I have no idea which it is.When the China weekly report comes out, we'll get more accurate gross.
  13. This is why megaplexes are a godsend - any movie with 3D has another screen playing the 2D. (As far as the more local 6-7 screen multiplexes, Regal Crow Canyon usually dedicates 2 screens to the big 3D release (one in 2D), while the Century Blackhawk Plaza likes to put the film on one screen and alternate 3D and 2D showtimes...)I am happy that 3D declined in the USA just as my interest did - I have never had any difficulty finding a 2D showing. (Except for IMAX - I wish more movies did what Man of Steel did and shut off the 3D for one showing per day. I will stop there, because otherwise this will turn into a five-paragraph IMAX rant.)
  14. Maybe the first trailer was THE trailer? Do we NEED another one giving away everything?
  15. In over a decade, DreamWorks has only had four non-sequels/spinoffs surpass the OS/WW gross of Shrek 1. And they have had at least one original every year but 2011.The "rule" seems to be that if a DWA original's OS/WW is above Shrek 1, it gets a sequel. If it's below, it doesn't. DWA is the animation studio most dependent on foreign grosses, so everything that hits OS gets a franchise. Plain and simple. (And it clearly works, as DWA has never had a sequel or spinoff gross less than $400M OS, out of the eight they've made so far.)
  16. For GOTG to stay at #1, both of the new releases would have to flop and GOTG would have to have a crazy good hold. It's a million to one shot. That said, GOTG is still looking at a great hold. Perhaps it could be flirting with 25%.
  17. The Identical's Sunday dropped 41% from estimates; it was overestimated by 70%. Has a daily number ever been overestimated to that degree?Another bit of trivia: The Identical is the lowest-ranking top (wide) opener since January 22-24, 1999 (the weekend after MLK, when Gloria opened at #15).
  18. Renee Zellweger? Also: From that "after" photo, Meg Ryan seems to be trying to transform herself into Sally Field.
  19. Eh? HTTYD2 was at $40M *last* weekend, now it's only at $39M? Was there a sudden drastic change in the dollar-pound exchange rate?
  20. What, were they afraid people would confuse it with the 2004 movie? So eventually, will we get Knights of the Roundtable: Brave Sir Robin? :PBut seriously, I think this is so they can have some kind of "franchise" banner. I don't know why "King Arthur" wouldn't have worked for that, but I'm not earning a six-figure salary to come up with ludicrous titles like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice or Jungle Book: Origins, so what do I know...
