  1. I'm with Coolio, sundance movies are usually overrated.
  2. The Witch didn't break out by any means, but it made 40M on a 4M budget and in the US had a near 3x multiplier which is great for a horror movie. As for awards, no it wasn't winning oscars but it's a horror movie, why would it? It was very well liked. even if some people on this forum were disappointed Accolades[edit] List of awards and nominations Award Date of ceremony Category Recipient(s) Result Ref(s) Austin Film Critics Association December 28, 2016 Best First Film The Witch Won [48] [49] Breakthrough Artist Award Anya Taylor-Joy Nominated Boston Society of Film Critics December 11, 2016 Best New Filmmaker Robert Eggers Won [50] Bram Stoker Awards April 29, 2017 Superior Achievement in a Screenplay Robert Eggers Won [51] Chicago Film Critics Association December 15, 2016 Best Art Direction The Witch Nominated [52] Most Promising Filmmaker Robert Eggers Won Critics Choice Awards December 11, 2016 Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie The Witch Nominated [53] Empire Awards March 19, 2017 Best Horror The Witch Won [54] Best Female Newcomer Anya Taylor-Joy Won Fangoria Chainsaw Awards October 2, 2017 [1] Best Film The Witch Won [55] Best Actress Anya Taylor-Joy Won Best Supporting Actor Ralph Ineson Nominated Best Score Mark Korven Nominated Golden Tomato Awards January 12, 2017 Best Horror Movie 2016 The Witch Won [56] Golden Trailer Awards May 4, 2016 Best Horror "Family" Won [57] Best Horror TV Spot "Life" Nominated Best Sound Editing in a TV Spot "Paranoia" Won Gotham Awards November 28, 2016 Breakthrough Actor Anya Taylor-Joy Won [58] Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award Robert Eggers Nominated Independent Spirit Awards February 25, 2017 Best First Screenplay Robert Eggers Won [59] Best First Feature The Witch London Film Critics' Circle January 22, 2017 Young British/Irish Performer of the Year Anya Taylor-Joy (also for Morgan and Split) Nominated [60] London Film Festival October 18, 2015 Sutherland Award Robert Eggers Won [61] New York Film Critics Online December 11, 2016 Best Debut Director Robert Eggers Won [62] Online Film Critics Society January 3, 2017 Best Picture The Witch Nominated [63] San Diego Film Critics Society December 12, 2016 Breakthrough Artist Anya Taylor-Joy Nominated [64] [65] San Francisco Film Critics Circle December 11, 2016 Best Production Design Craig Lathrop Nominated [66] [67] Saturn Awards June 28, 2017 Best Horror Film The Witch Nominated [68] Best Performance by a Younger Actor Anya Taylor-Joy Nominated Seattle Film Critics Society January 5, 2017 Best Picture of the Year The Witch Nominated [69] [70] Best Director Robert Eggers Nominated Best Cinematography Jarin Blaschke Nominated Best Costume Design Linda Muir Nominated Best Youth Performance Anya Taylor-Joy Won Harvey Scrimshaw Nominated Best Villain Charlie and Wahab Chaudary (as Black Phillip) Nominated St. Louis Gateway Film Critics Association December 18, 2016 Best Horror/Science-Fiction Film The Witch Won [71] Sundance Film Festival February 1, 2015 Directing Award Robert Eggers Won [72] Grand Jury Prize Robert Eggers Nominated Toronto Film Critics Association December 11, 2016 Best First Feature The Witch Won [73] Washington D.C. 3. yeah it was great. Just very surprised if only the UK got it in cinemas. Wonder why that is. I understand it going straight to DVD because I doubt it would have made any money in cinemas - it's a western themed horror movie that probably would have got an NC17 rating in america. I'm just surprised as to why they would give it a theatrical release in the UK and nowhere else.
  4. According to IMDB - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2494362/?ref_=nv_sr_1 - it was released 19 Feb 2016. You can't click on the release date to see international dates so maybe it only had a theatrical release in the UK? Looking at data for that weekend, it opened at #33, grossed £29,465, and was released in 52 cinemas. 52 is an okay number, a big release gets 600, compare that to 4000 in the US and thats the equivalent of 350 cinemas in the US. A poor performance but not an insignificant release in terms of screens.
  5. Dunno how many cinemas it released in, but it must have been a relatively wide release as it got to my town. Films that are very limited releases are generally relegated to London cinemas only. I remember seeing it February 2016 after one of my last shifts working in the cinema.
  6. So he lives with his mother, doesn't have a girlfriend, and enjoys listening to an Abba song, therefore he must be gay? Clearly you're not the only one who sees this, I get that, but sorry I think this is reading way too far into it. Dixon is a man child. That's it. I dont see how imagining him being gay adds anything of value. Also not seeing how Red is gay, apart from Dixon insulting him. Sexuality just does not come into this movie.
  7. There's a showing of Boogie Nights on 35mm near me in a few weeks time. I will give PTA another chance.
  8. yeah, work christmas do. it's a popular venue, think there were about 800 people there. the party is in one of the hangars, you walk under all sorts of planes. not very interested in that stuff myself so don't know what kind of planes they were but yeah. was pretty sweet. stupidly expensive though, £70 tickets and every drink was £6 it was nuts. but worth it for the girls.
  9. I had a christmas party last month at the aforementioned imperial war museum where Jackson has got the footage from. got off with several girls. Praise PJ
  10. they shoulda campaigned for the Efman duet and threw shot glasses across the oscars theatre.
  11. Top three of the year so far: 1. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri 2. Last Flag Flying 3. Coco
  12. Does anyone know why there's no short film in front of Coco? It's the first pixar movie in 20 years to not have one... what gives?
  13. saw three billboards again, I'm really starting to make a thing of cinema rewatches recently... Baby Driver - 7 times Last Jedi - 4 times Three Billboards - 3 times will be seeing Disaster Artist for the 4th time, later this week. I think I have a problem.
  14. their 2018 is set to be a lot worse than their 2017. this is their grand line up for the year: Annihilation Paramount 2/23/18 Sherlock Gnomes Paramount 3/23/18 A Quiet Place Paramount 4/6/18 2017 Cloverfield Movie Paramount 4/20/18 Action Point Paramount 5/11/18 Mission: Impossible 6 Paramount 7/27/18 Overlord Paramount 10/26/18 Untitled Paramount Event Film Paramount 11/2/18 Bumblebee Paramount 12/21/18
  15. I like your list. Few things: The Great Wall is not Matt Damon's "highest grossing" film, if you mean like 3rd or 4th then sure but there are 2 Bourne movies that grossed 400+ and one of the Oceans might of, not sure. Why is Valerian a fail? It's a minor miracle that a studio can make a profit off a 180M film that only grosses 200M. That's a win in my eyes. DM3 did not have a "massive" drop from Minions, it was a 20% drop. Why is Lego Ninjago a big fail? Compared to some of the runners up at least. It's a movie that's made to shift plastic toys. The Lego Movie not so much as it wasn't based on any existing Lego products but Ninjago was just made to sell Ninjago toys, and I'll bet anything that it worked. Why is The Dark Tower a big fail? 112M on 60M budget yeah not very good, but it's not that bad. It grossed more than King Arthur in america and cost a third of the budget, yet is higher on your list... sometimes you can kick off a new series, sometimes you can't. Please amend your suggestion that "we all love" BR2049. It's one of the worst films of the year. What's Kingsman a disappointment for? It made a similar gross to the first movie, on a similar budget. They're going ahead with the third movie since the second was a success. I think it's a little premature to claim "it seems like it will be a movie the director keeps saying he's working on but will never actually come to fruition." it's been like 3 months since the film came out. Give it a chance. Props to giving Paramount a shout out on the fails list.
  16. it was alright. I thought it was a fun take on groundhog day concept. Didn't like the ending reveal but otherwise enjoyed myself. saw it on halloween, never seen a movie on halloween before, I think that officially makes me an adult - going to the cinema rather than going out clubbing.
  17. Just ignore what that moron said. It's hard to know where to even start. And no, there were no gay characters in the film, maybe that means the film is Homophobic. Red Welby spends most of his time chatting up the girl in his office, he is not gay, Dixon just calls him a fag in the bar.
  18. When we first meet Elba, he is doing an English accent. I assumed his character was English. i wondered why his child was American and he was English. His accent changes a lot. I am sticking to my opinion as it really stuck out in the film the girl I saw it with said the same thing too. Maybe it's because we're English and you're American? ANd yeah couldn't really follow the film, didnt see what the big deal was. What you said, wasn't clear at all in the film. either way I was utterly bored, would have been close to walking out had I not been with my friend.
  19. Haven't seen the movie but I hope you are joking. If you're not joking - yes the film is based on the events leading up to the subject of All The President's Men. There have been plenty of headlines about how The Post is an unofficial prequel.
