Mario is the best selling video game franchise of all time. He has more wide appeal than Sonic, despite arguably having a less vocal fanbase. He’s Mickey Mouse, while Sonic is Bugs Bunny.
I would assume Universal already realized Disney would likely have an animated film scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend, since they always release an animated movie around that date.
