  1. While statements #1 and #3 are true, I completely disagree with Corpse's conclusion for #2. I lived in Japan for almost 6 years. During my life there, I thought The Lion King was the biggest Disney's animated film in Japan (from the 80's and 90's). That's because it's very popular and referenced so many times, by so many people. So saying "It doesn't have the cultural/generational significance" is just not right. While the original animated film wasn't that big, the popularity of Lion King has risen significantly since then. So if it's really really good, I can see 10B yen or even $100m+. But then, we have One Piece and Weathering with You. And yeah, they will be the main problems for TLK.
  2. I think it will get to $6m. But barely. Although I hope it will get at least 2x multiplier for a $7m total.
  3. You mean China and Japan? (And maybe Taiwan? I'm not sure). Cause it's disappointing too in the rest of Asia, including big market like South Korea. It's even underperforming in Indonesia, a market that loves action spectacle films. I expected it to open with at least $5m, but it only made $3.5 in its OW.
  4. That Indonesia's number! Didn't expect it to pass $10m so easily. Already outgrossed BatB, and will make more than most MCU movies. Did not see this coming at all. If it survives local films' attack on Eid week, it could even secure a spot inside the top 10 imported film of all time! That is unprecedented for a musical film. Then again, it's not just a musical. It has romance, drama, comedy, and action. A movie for all and a perfect one for holidays.
  5. Well even without knowing the controversies, the GA still had internet access, watched the trailers and wasn't impressed. At least here the hype was really low before the movie was opened. One of my friends, who is the definition of "GA", thought the Genie was weird. But thanks to its great WOM, Aladdin opened to a surprisingly big number ($5.7m) in Indonesia, and is poised to become one of the biggest movies of the year, despite being a musical, a genre that is not popular at all here. The point is, Aladdin is overperforming, considering the lack of hype before its release.
  6. Yes, on paper, Aladdin was a sure hit. But in reality, people wrote it off from the get go (Guy Ritchie? Jasmine is too white! Will Smith as Genie? What is Billy Magnussen doing there? Are they white washing this?). So they needed to turn this around, but unfortunately, the teasers and images only made it worse. That full trailer was the only decent one from the whole marketing before the movie was released. Meanwhile, Godzilla had amazing trailers, killer posters, and great marketing. Yes it's more segmented and nerdy, but it shouldn't have bombed like what's happening now in OS-China. I think, Aladdin's better-than-expected quality and box office performance kinda killed the excitement for Godzilla. Especially for the GA. But we'll see how it performs in North America.
  7. I don't know much about these kaijus, but I enjoyed the movie. The monsters, the fights between them, the visuals, the effects, all were amazing. I got goosebumps in some of the scenes. My only complain about the visuals is, many times it was so dark and smoky, that it was hard to see what's happening. Sometimes it was even hard for me to distinguish the monsters. My biggest complains about the movie, are the story and many of the human characters. First, I didn't get Vera Farmiga's character. She's all over the place. I mean she clearly was a cold blooded terorist. She's okay that her colleagues whom she knew well were brutally murdered (one of them on the head execution style), and didn't even care if the father of her only kid left was also killed by one of the titans, even though she was devastated that her son was killed by Godzilla. She's obviously crazy, and borderline a psychopath. But somehow the script tried to dismiss that. Sally Hawkins' character didn't do much and then died just like that, such a waste. And apparently only Serizawa mourned for her. Also, they were really chill about the effects of nuclear radiation. I didn't even realize there were teleportations, since I was confused the whole time about who was where. I did like Millie Bobby Brown. She's great in this. Those problems I mentioned above bothered me, but overall I was still highly entertained by the movie. I think critics are right to some degree, but still too harsh.
  8. I agree. Last week I thought Godzilla would dominate this week. But Aladdin turned out to have a really good WOM, so it didn't lose that many screens. For FSS, I think they're gonna be close, with Godzilla having the edge on Aladdin, for being the newer one. Either way, I can't believe a fantasy musical will actually outgross a CGI-heavy action film here! So unexpected.
  9. You're forgetting Japan. Frozen is #3 of all time with 20m admission. Bohemian Rhapsody & BatB were huge success with more than 12B yen. Les Miserables, La La Land, Greatest Showman, all were big as well. Even Phantom of the Opera was successful in Japan. So both countries are very musical-friendly.
  10. I guess, but not really. Sometimes we try to practice Islam in "Arab way". But most of the time, we try to separate Islam teaching and Arab culture, because those are 2 different things. So most people here don't really relate to the Arab culture. Especially the one's depicted in this movie, that seems to be detached from religion.
  11. Wait, what? That Indonesian number is beyond my expectation! Buzz was almost non existence. Musical is not a favorite genre here. There was a riot in the capital city on the same day as Aladdin's OD. So I didn't expect much. But the reception is overwhelmingly good. A Whole New World is suddenly a hit again after almost 30 years. The WOM's gonna be great. With this OW it could outgross BatB, which is currently the biggest musical film ever.
  12. Nope, you cannot judge it by the original box office numbers. BatB and TLK have gotten more popular than Aladdin since then, with the musicals and everything, especially TLK. I can see TLK reaching $100m in Japan, while Aladdin makes $60-70m.
  13. Aladdin has potential here in Indonesia. BatB made $9m with great legs, one of the biggest movies of 2017, which was a surprise since we didn't really like musicals. And Aladdin is a more popular story. The new version of A Whole New World is already a big hit, topping the iTunes and Spotify chart. Started to be played a lot on the radio too. That will help the movie. But unfortunately, the release date is pretty bad. Godzilla is coming in a week, and then Eid week after that, which will be dominated by local movies. Think Chinese New Year in China. So it only has like a week to make money.
  14. That's interesting. Here the average would be around $3.2-3.3 for the whole country. Compared to other countries, it's very cheap, but apparently it's even cheaper in India. In Jakarta, on weekends the prices can go up to $5.3 for regular and $10 for premium seats. IMAX though, surprisingly has around the same ticket prices as regular screen, even IMAX 3D.
  15. I was like, oh great, this forum and its overreaction again. But then I watched the Prince Ali clip, and... wow. It is bland, lacks of excitement and energy. Also, the point of making the live action version, is to watch all of the magic in the animated version comes to life. In this sequence, it's the genie. But then they made him appear in his human form, stripping all the magic from it. Well, it's only a small part of the movie. We saw a glimpse of a scene in the cave with the genie and it looked intriguing. So did the magic carpet ride scene. I'm still optimistic that it will not be that bad, and I will still enjoy the movie.
  16. Nah, Endgame deserves it. It's the "final" chapter of a sucessful cinematic universe that we had never seen before, that marks the end of an era, with characters that have been a part of people's lives for 11 years, more epic, more emotional, a bigger phenomenon and IMO a better film than IW. Even if you think IW is better, all of the other aspects I mentioned make it suitable as the record breaker, no?
  17. Do you have the list of the highest grossing films in India? Cause I'm so confused, I got different numbers from multiple sources. Also, I know Dangal is up there, but no chance of outgrossing PK?
  18. I really liked the ending. That Pikachu was actually his dad. It kinda justified Ryan Reynold's voice and also gave the movie an emotional punch. The guy wanted some kind of relationship with his dad and then it turned out that all this time he was having an adventure together with his dad. It's flawed and cheesy at times, but overall a solid and entertaining movie. The girl's acting was pretty bad though, especially at the beginning when they first met.
  19. I would say it still has a chance to hit $50m. But I'm just being optimistic. It doesn't matter anyway, it's already a huge success in Japan for a CBM.
  20. It means, doesn't matter if EG passes $50m or not. Because even if it ends up being just below $50m (for example $49m), it's still an amazing result and a huge increase from IW.
  21. In Indonesia, it already passed IW on Friday to become the highest grossing film of all time. Legs are even better than I expected. All of its first 8 days are bigger than Captain Marvel's OD, which held the OD record before EG broke it. Looks like it can reach $32m and 10m admisions by the end of this weekend. That's my optimistic projection anyway. Could be lower than that. Now the question is, how will EG perform after this Monday. Because Ramadhan starts on Monday, and people will focus on their religious activities, like going to the mosque more often than usual, and spend more time with their families after work by breaking the fast at home, rather than say, go to the mall to see Endgame. Also Pikachu is coming.
  22. That means Indonesia's Tuesday was $2.3? Bigger than Monday? I guess Wednesday being a public holiday probably helped it. Thinking it could pass $30m by the end of this week. Crazy.
  23. Wait, EG is gonna pass 5B yen easily, no? Let's say it averages 350M for the next 6 days. Then by the end of this Super Golden Week, EG will have amassed 4.57B yen. Surely it will make way more than 430M for the rest of its run? And if the daily average becomes 400M, then it's 4.87B after Golden Week. So maybe 6B+ total?
