If anyone in the DC area wants to go see an advanced screening tonight, I have an extra ticket. PM me if you're interested.

The movie is screening in none of the main markets yet. They are really trying to appeal much broader by the looks of it. No NY, LA and Chicago public screening opened yet when those are normally the first ones. Still waiting for something in California :)

It feels like I couldn't pay to give this ticket away. A lot of my friends are busy, but most just aren't interested, which surprised me, since I thought this was a pretty hotly anticipated movie. I'm excited, although I didn't get a chance to see any of the older movies recently. I at least wanted to re-watch the original before this, as it's been a few years.

Finally got home so I'll share some quick thoughts. First off, it's good. There are some truly great parts, but there are some lulls pace-wise, a few stylistic choices, and a script that has some weak spots(but is mostly solid) that holds it back from sustaining those great parts. The plot is pretty cliched, but the growth and relationships of the characters are what sets it apart from your average sports fare. The movie is actually pretty damn funny, and Coogler for the most part does a good job keeping things moving along. Jordan is solid, Thompson is really good, but Sly is the real star, and he's absolutely fantastic. He gives this role his all, he's funny as well as a bit heartbroken, because of all the shit life's thrown at him. It's great to see Stallone doing amazing work in the role that defined him. Jordan and Stallone have some real great chemistry, and their relationship is the crux of the movie (if that wasn't obvious). And the romantic subplot actually adds to the movie, Thompson thankfully wasn't wasted, as she is such a terrific actress. The fight scenes are extremely well done, almost certainly the best shot of the series. And of course there are training montages that do the franchise proud. Oh, and there is a long shot in this movie that was absolutely breathtaking (the best part of the film IMO). My crowd absolutely loved it, and it's clear that it will be an enormous crowd-pleaser. If this doesn't gross at least 100m DOM, I will be shocked, and there is potential for a lot more. Overall, an emotional, and extremely well made addition to the Rocky legacy. B+

Edit: some grammatical errors and words left out were fixed.

I think reviews will be solid, but unspectacular. The fact that it is a crowd pleaser will both help it and work against it in that regard. But I didn't have any preconceptions about what the movie would be going in (which is so nice, it's always such an echo chamber once reviews come out), so I could be wrong.

I also think that my review sounds like I'm criticizing Coogler for not doing a good job. I feel like I didn't give him enough credit. I don't agree with every decision (that's almost every film though) but there's some real flashes of brillance. And he keeps the film really grounded and focused on the character and the story and very rarely veers off course. He has crafted a solid, crowd pleasing, GA friendly film in only his 2nd feature at the age of 29. That's really tough to do and I'm super excited to see what he has in store for the future, because he's clearly one of the most talented directors working.

If anyone's interested, it's kind of a hard PG-13. Wouldn't have surprised me if it was an R, but it would've been really soft.

I saw it as well, but it's no where near an R-rated movie.  Standard PG content. The violence was no worse than what we've seen in any of the other Rocky movies, maybe even less so.
