Temple of doom is like watching paint dry blind folded

For the record thouh Krystal skulls isn't great there are no stinkjng aliens in it. They are 'interdimemensial beings'

I am so old that I remember watching The Last Crusade as a kid in a drive in theater. You have that old radio system next to your car. The popcorn in the front seat as us kids ask the adults to turn up the radio. That was a great film no matter how you saw it. I also distinctly remembering that Temple of Doom was not a good sequel when I watched it on VHS as a kid. Many people defend it despite its own creators trying to disown it. I respect their efforts to defend a maligned sequel. I do that with Alien 3 to this day.

But also, I just rewatched Last Crusade last night for the umpteenth time. That remains my favourite. The pairing of Ford and Connery is one of the best in movie history and that ending is just pure perfection. I think I will always view the sequels badly simply because that ending deserved to be final.

I remember when I visited Petra I started humming the theme music. Just love it.

My big question is whether there was a huge audience clamoring for an Indy 5 after Crystal Skull. Anecdotally I think most people weren't.

Maybe in 2008, but in 2023? I don’t think anyone wanted it.

Crystal Skull was 15 years ago though. 15 years is a long time in the world of franchises. Crystal Skull might’ve spent the goodwill of the IJ franchise too.

that would mean the opposite - the longer time this has since Crystal Skull, the better it will do.

Possibly, but in 2008 these kind of legacy sequels were still rare, and a 60-something Indy was more believable than an 80 yo Indy.

I mean, an 80 year old archaeologist is still an archaeologist. I always find that “unbelievable 80 year old”complaint fairly redundant. I’m guessing that they probably lean into his age here, so it’s not like he’s going to be outrunning boulders like he’s in his 30’s.

 

Sure, he’ll be more mobile that most of our grandparents, but in a franchise with aliens, magical gems, and centuries old knights guarding mystical cups, an 80 year old adventurer isn’t out of the realms of possibility.

I wonder if instead of Crystal Skull we got some version of Fate of Atlantis in 2008, that there would be more pent up demand for this,

 

It felt that most of the audience that actually still watches movies in theatres was very quiet for this, as opposed to something like Star Wars.
