Lego could earn as much as $20 million on Friday alone, although more conservative estimates show it earning $15 million to $18 million for the day. Variety George Clooney and teenage vamps, beware — “The Lego Movie” is toying with the biggest box office opening of 2014. Written and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”), Warner Bros.’ 3D toon is on track to gross $60 million this weekend, making it the second-highest February opening of all time. The family movie, co-financed by Village Roadshow, is based on the widely popular toy line and riding very strong reviews (97% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), not to mention premium 3D ticket prices. WB is so confident in “Lego,” the studio has already commissioned a sequel to the $60 million-produced toon, which is playing in 3,650 locations nationwide. The voice cast is led by Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Ferrell and Will Arnett. Adding further firepower to the domestic box office is Sony’s “The Monuments Men,” which may reach $24 million by Sunday, based on early ticket sales. George Clooney’s World War II drama, co-starring Matt Damon and Cate Blanchett, was originally scheduled to open in December but was delayed this past fall to allow Clooney and the studio further time in post-production. This weekend’s other wide release, the Weinstein Company’s adaptation of the YA series “Vampire Academy,” should bow to approximately $7 million. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Early Friday Numbers Gitesh Pandya @giteshpandya 1m#TheLEGOMovie now tracking towards about $19M today, still on course to finish wknd near $70M. That is why I took the Early Friday from the title. It makes no sense. When we have some sort of estimates later today then someone can create the Friday numbers thread. kitik
Went to the 12:40 showing of Lone Survivor this afternoon. The theater was packed and lined to the door because school was cancelled yet again today (below zero F temps at bus stops this morning). When we were walking in, we heard one of the guys at the counter announce that the 12:50 showing of Lego was sold out. Obviously only because school was out for most kids around here, but still, a sellout at 12:50 on a Friday is impressive.
