Booksmart Opening Day (Thu 25/07/19)

10.45am 9/216
1.10pm 9/216
6:00pm 9/216
8:40pm 7/160

Total 34/808

First three sessions are all in the same cinema, all same seats sold (so these are very likely to be seats that are damaged.) No point doing comps to TLK because the discrepancy is too big, but not much of a start for Booksmart here (although it seems like tickets haven’t long been on sale) hopefully it picks up in a few days and again I will do a 12 hours before on Wednesday night once I get back from ushering at NZIFF.

Posting this a little early but don’t think it will make much of a difference. Interesting to note that this is a movie of the week, which means tickets are discounted; however that clearly isn’t having much impact. Hopefully it is walk up heavy. I probably would have gone to see this tomorrow (and still might but at a later date) but I’ve decided to go see The Farewell instead (free ticket because of my volunteering at the film festival which is a pretty good perk.)

Hobbs and Shaw opening day (Thu 1/08/2019) - 3 days before release

12:00pm 23/364

3:00pm  20/364

6:00pm 58/364

9:00pm 38/364

Total 139/1456 (9.54%)

Comp

15% of TLK (sold 926 tickets at same point) which would be a $766,500 opening weekend.

A couple of things to note with the TLK comp is that there are no GC or 3D tickets for Hobbs and Shaw but there was for Lion King. Also Lion King has a lot more sessions compared to Hobbs and Shaw, so even though Hobbs and Shaw has a smaller percentage of tickets sold it still doesn’t have as many seats free to sell unless it adds more sessions.

That being said Hobbs and Shaw is doing ok, much better than Booksmart, still hopefully it gets a bit of demand in there and adds more sessions for a higher amount of tickets sold when I check again on Wednesday night.

Hobbs and Shaw opening day (Thu 1/08/2019) -12 hours before release

9:00pm 57/364

9:00pm GC 14/40

Total 361/3560 (10.14%)

Comps:

19.72% of TLK (sold 1831 tickets at same point) which would be a $1,007,692 opening weekend.

950% of Booksmart (sold 38 tickets at the same point) which would be a $511,575 opening weekend.

I think the TLK comp is more reasonable and somewhere around a $1m opening weekend seems right. The good news for Hobbs and Shaw is that there have been plenty more showings added, hopefully the movie is walkup heavy otherwise those extra showings will have been wasted.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood opening day (Thu 15/08/2019) - 3 days before release

8:30pm 81/364

8:30pm GC 34/40

Total 115/404 (28.46%)

Comps

12.42% of TLK (sold 926 tickets at same point) which would be a $634,662 opening weekend.

82.73% of Hobbs and Shaw (sold 139 tickets at the same point) which would be a $1.32m opening weekend.

Obviously not that many sessions but it is great that it’s sales are so close to Hobbs and Shaw at a similar amount. If other sessions get added, which I would seem is likely, that allows for plenty of room to grow.

81.99% of Hobbs and Shaw (sold 361 tickets at the same point) which would be a $1.31m opening weekend.

Pretty much kept in line with Hobbs and Shaw and improved a little with TLK comp, although it has fewer seats available than both those releases. I also don’t know if this is going to be presage heavy or walk up heavy as I haven’t really kept an eye on a Tarantino film before but I think that will determine how much it makes. At the moment I think anything over a million would be great but my gut is telling me it will come in closer to the TLK comp and come in just shy of a million, which to be fair isn’t bad at all.

246.96% of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (sold 115 tickets at the same point) which would be a $2.03m opening weekend.

It Chapter 2 is looking pretty great so far, only concern is that most of the ticket sale have come from the early preview but hopefully that changes as we get closer to release.

It Chapter 2 has unfortunately stayed frontloaded so all the comps have dropped slightly, that said there is still plenty of room for walk ups on Thursday. Very surprised that there are no sellouts for the Gold Class sessions on Wednesday night as for a big movie they usually sell out very quickly. Will be interesting to see how this plays out, I think it will still do well maybe just not $2m+ opening weekend that it as looking like a few days ago, although I hope I’m wrong as we need something to liven up the box office.

56.34% of It Chapter 2 (sold 284 tickets at the same point) which would be a $509,293 opening weekend.

139.13% of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (sold 115 tickets at the same point) which would be a $1.14m opening weekend.

Not a great start for Joker but tickets did go on sale later than most bug releases, hopefully it will pick up pace in the next couple of days will check again 12 hours before release like I normally do. At the moment looking like it will fall short of a $1m opening and if it plays like It Chapter 2 may even struggle to break a half million dollar opening here in New Zealand.

Also this is my first time tracking a superhero movie but for reference a lot of superhero movies regularly top $1m opening weekend, recently Aquaman and Spider-Man both topped $1.5m and Captain Marvel topped $2m. Joker seems more in line with Shazam which opened with just over $800,000 at the moment hopefully that will improve as the hype/buzz hopefully translates to more ticket sales.

150.68% of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (sold 296 tickets at the same point) which would be a $1.24m opening weekend.

Great improve, net from Joker all the comps improved, although the IT 2 comp is still a little worrisome, hopefully this momentum continues to walkups. A bunch of showtimes were addd and evening sessions are probing particularly strong with earlier showings needing some foot traffic to improve overall numbers.

If Inhad to guess a number I think Joker will come in around $900,000 for the weekend judging by comps and how they have improved over the last couple of days.

Thor 3 did N$7.5mn compared to N$3.9mn of Thor 2. Its biggest non-Avengers MCU film from what I can see.

Yeah, I know Ragnarok got a huge benefit from Taika already, but I still expect Thor 4 to have a nice % bump from it as will rest of world. If great hoping of N$2.5 Open and near N$10 total.

That would mean it would be either his highest grossing film or close to it, don’t know if Thor 4 can manage that but maybe around $8-9m NZD. Boy and Wilderpeople which are his biggest films are very Kiwi-centric films that appeal to the local population in a way that not even MCU films would, so unless Thor 4 is set in NZ I can’t see it getting over $9m NZD.

Big jump but still a ways off TLK (although it has beaten its percentage sold), really needs more screenings added, hopefully in the next couple of days. Right now most of the preferred seats have been sold from the 3-8pm sessions.

Compared to 3 days/12 hours before release of other films.

TLK at the same point sold 926/5338 (17.34%) which would be a $2.2m opening weekend

Hobbs and Shaw at the same point sold 139/1456 (9.54%) which would be a $4.58m opening weekend

Joker at the same point sold 160/1536 (10.41%) which would be a $3.16m opening weekend
