There is some speculation I've seen from fans that the Red Ranger's suit design might be a homage to Lord Zedd, who was basically a walking muscular humanoid with a metal exoskeleton and "Z" staff.

The thing about this, for those who know the history of Super Sentai, is that there is a connection between Marvel and Toei.  Toei, in 1992, would create the Zyuranger series, that Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is based on.  There is this article about Gene Pelc on Rangerboard, and the most interesting part of that article to me, describes what the concept for Battle Fever J was based on, and it is based on one now very famous Marvel property to general audiences.

This isn't a low budget Asian tv show. That shit doesn't really work in movies anymore. 

 

I guess it helps that I was never really a big Power Rangers fan to begin with.
