Terrific legs for Guardians.  Top 3 at the U.S. box office for 2014 now have an average RT score of 90%.  Top 11 at the U.S. box office for 2014 have an average RT score of 75%.  Transformers 4 is the mind-boggling outlier at #4 with only an 18%.

Not really mind-boggling because this franchise has always been criticproof. Even though AOE dropped significantly domestically, it's still a juggernaut overseas.

But that's because the Chinese went crazy for it . If not for them we would have another amazing spider man 2 and when the Chinese get used to American spectacles they might not be there to save the next transformers movie .

China won't stop growing for at least 10 years and in the end it should pass the US. And TF 5 increasing from the 4th is pretty much a safe bet. Even if you take the China gross away from TF4, you still have a 505M grosser (Spidey, and that's with 95m from China) vs 520M. So even without China, TF4 is still bigger than any other movie OS this year (and the second biggest is DOFP with 512M).

Several articles (like screendaily...) see 2020 as the year China will surpass the US They still build ~ 5000 new theaters per year 2013 = $3.60 B2012 = $2.81 B Difference +28.0%  (@Fullbuster has some very nice charts at the international area (in 'Brazil') here in this forum)

But, with studios only getting 25% of the movie grosses in China, China still has to surpass the U.S. by a much great percentage for it to be as profitable as the U.S. for studios.

But they spend almost nothing on marketing in China so the difference isn't that big after all.

Not true, still had a huge run overseas.  If it did what it did last time in China, it still would have done close to 900 mill.

That's not true anymore either.  It used to be that but it has gone up now.  Paramount is getting 37-40% of the gross from China.
