I think this weekend is more of a self fulfilling prophecy as opposed to anything else. This weekend sucks because studios don't release big movies this weekend, studios don't release big movies this weekend because this weekend sucks. If WB had released Hobbit this weekend, it would probably do just as good or bad as it would in 2 weeks' time, same thing if Disney releases SW7 on this weekend next year.

The two week rule is why studios don't release movies this weekend. You get upto a dozen new releases and Oscar movie expansions between December 18th and 25th so basically any movie released this weekend will lose a lot of theaters in two weeks time unless it becomes a big hit. It is just too risky for studios to release a big budget movie when you are guaranteed to lose a shitload of theaters in 14-21 days and not have good legs.

Another terrible number for Penguins.....you people believing this will make anything north of 80 domestic are insane.

I had real hopes for Penguins, and the potential for a break-out was there.  However, having seen it I can say that it just isn't very good and the upcoming slate of kids' movies is just brutal.

That makes a lot of sense actually.
