The thread is called OW of 2015 and American Snipers wide opening weekend happened in 2015 so it should be added to this year

You either have to accept AS a 2014 film, or this thread have eligibility criteria that clearly discriminates for or against films that go wide later in their runs.

American Sniper should be counted for 2015. It is a shame Taken 3 failed to break the 40M OW.

American Sniper's gross is counted towards 2014, but his OW is 2015.

The real opening weekend for AS was last weekends. It only went to platform theaters (4 theaters) through Holidays. An expansion is what films like Wild have done. Look at Opening weekends rank: it has been already counted as best January and Winter opening ever.

 

Yeah, if AS has the record for biggest OW in January than it should be considered a 2015 opening.

I personally believe this is 2014 as, like you said, it was first screened to the public in 2014. However, some people seem to believe that "screened to the public" can only be when it's widely released.

How is it an expansion and also considered as the largest OPENING weekend in January. It's a wide opening, just like Frozen was a wide opening when it expanded from a platform release.

I could understand if it went from say 500 theaters to 1500 theaters, but it went from 4 to 3,555. 4 theaters is pretty much payed pre-screening.

If Box office mojo is counting it as an opening weekend, I see why none of us shouldn't as well.
