Granted, I do think it also has to do with the fact that the people who got clapping worked with half the room. It's not like a blind populartiy contest, these are people who are friends and colleagues with the recently deceased.

A lot of times it actually seems to be random. Remember in 2010 when the segment opened with Michael Jackson?

I think with this years oscars there is no mainstream story about the awards.

 

Last year you had Ellen, a lot of the winning films were widely watched.
