Well not bad for Sony but still the damage the movie brought to the company is just way too much that this may not be enough to see if all the mess was worth it

Well Titanic and Avatar were December releases that won their release year respectively even if a lot of their box office came from the succeeding year so if AS could do that, well it will have nice company

For calendar year 2009, Avatar was the 5th highest grossing film . It was the highest grossing film for calendar year 2010.

For calendar year 1997, Titanic was the 7th highest grossing film. It was the highest grossing film for calendar year 1998, by a pretty wide margin.

yes I know that like in calendar year 2014 GOTG is the highest grossing film but that's how they will rank it anyway even if a December release (even in 2-4 theaters) earned more money the next year, the ranking will still be counted on the year of release

Something occurred to me. It's very likely that, at least going back to 1982, American Sniper will be the third highest grossing film in the year after its release.

For reference, here are all films that earned at least 100m after their year of release:

1     Titanic                          $488,194,015     $600,788,188     12/19/97
2     Avatar                           $466,141,929     $749,766,139     12/18/09
3     Raiders of the Lost Ark          $190,360,115     $212,222,025     6/12/81
4     Chicago                          $167,547,745     $170,687,518     12/27/02

It would need to be ridiculously frontloaded to not beat Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The Raiders number is wrong. BOM's 1982 (and specifically January 1982) calendar grosses for a sone 1981 films roll in a large portion of the 1981 calendar grosses from the weekends they don't have numbers for.

Raiders only has numbers from 1981 going up to weekend 2 (gross to date: $21,861,910). The data resumes on Jan 8-10, 1982 (gross to date: $179,642,063). Subtract the actual weekend take of $1,908,232, and you get $177,733,831. Subtract the June 12-21 '81 gross and you get $155,871,921.

For reasons unknown, that $155.87m is rolled into the calendar gross for January 1982, when it actually belongs in 1981.

That Raiders number is nonsense, it had made $180m by the end of of 81.

As I said, on BOM any 1981 films that have 1982 weekend grosses have the difference between their cume at the time of their last recorded weekend from 1981, and their cume minus their first recorded weekend gross from 1982, rolled into 1982 when they belong in 1981. Weird.

If you look at BOM's top 10 adjusted months, it has January 1982 at #3 because it has a bunch of 1981 BO rolled into it (in particular that $156m of Raiders gross, but also 1981 money from Arthur as well).

Raiders actually only made $34.5m in 1982.

I go to that theatre every now and then. My former boss used to be the GM there. Nice theatre.

Always busy.

I didn't realize you were in Houston. Cool :)

It's a nice theater. Not quite the Palladium obviously but that's too far away. For me, it's a 20 minute drive, but it's worth the extra five minutes over going to AMC Willowbrook.

That theater is always packed. I'm talking "park on the grass" kind of packed. Parents live about 30 minutes from there in the Spring/Woodlands area. Northwest suburbs of Houston have a shitload of people and it just keeps growing. Amazing thing to me is the number of grocery stores and the fact that they all stay crowded.
