Saw it tonight

I guess I'd say its better than 6 but worse than 5 and 1

It reaches quite an emotional beat at the ending but some of the problems are still there ... like nobody dying ever! As the film opens you go like 'oh come on' as another character that should've died is actually still alive and ready to come back in the next movie

Stunts are good and it certainly doesn't drag in the middle part which I liked but its also overlong a bit and could've done with 10 -15 minutes or so less

Statham is great but I must say he's underused here

Wan didn't do as good of a job as Lin did with action sequences cause he does tend to shake and circle the camera around too much so you really can't tell what's going on

All in all its a fun romp and manages to have an even more ridiculous finale than the sixth one .... you gotta see it to believe it

It's def below 1 and 5, but it's very good.

I was assuming that Paul Walker would either have a much smaller part on the main story and a nice final scene in the beach house or it would be really weird and possibly embarrasing if they insisted to include him more with tons of stunt doubles scenes and CGI.  I don't know how much of his performance is his and how much is post production and stunts but they did a hell of a job. I guess it's something like twin Armie Hammer in Social Network, if you reaally just focus on it you might recognize some scenes that are touched digitally but if you just watching the movie the effect is seamless. And the movie is much less enseble and much more Vin-Paul than the previous two, I didn't expected that at all.

As for the last scene, it was perfect. They couldn't have done it better.

I know it sounds cheesy; literally everyone of the past three movies I've seen, I've declared the best movie of the year so far. However, I feel confident saying Furious 7 will break that streak. Wan takes the director's wheel and does absolutely everything right. Lucas Black has one scene, all the action is closer to Fast Five's "grounded craziness" while still feeling like they raised the stakes from 6, and everything involving Brian is perfect. For the last seven minutes, I was absolutely bawling. All the action is well shot, even if one scene kinda reminded me of a better one from M:I4.

Going into spoilerly details now, which I will tag even though this is a thread with spoilers allowed:

One thing particularly impressive is that it got me misty-eyed at something that wasn't all related to Brian. Letty talking about their wedding to unconscious Dom was really well done, and an excellent pay-off to the sometimes cheesy amnesia plot. Of course, the ending with everyone talking about Brian leaving, and then Dom just leaves. I was sad, but then Brian showed up for one last race. Vin's monologue was perfect because it was

Vin speaking about Paul. The entire ending is nailed perfectly and elevates everything that proceeded it. The F+F movies have always had heart to them, but that was utterly emotional and left me wrecked for about two minutes into the credits.

Basically, the movie is the best F+F yet and certain to be the highpoint of the franchise with the tragedy of Paul Walker. This is great blockbuster making, filled with so much fun and yet emotionally ruining you. I'm glad that this past week, I decided to take the ride, and this is the best capper to my week. It's one last ride of pure, well, Fast and Furious. There's not an adjective to describe this franchise, but it was well worth it. This film itself though, gets the first A+ of the franchise for me.

One thing that really let me down in this movie was the villain played by Jason Statham. It looked like he was forcibly inserted into the movie just because they wanted Jason Statham in the movie. Every single action sequence is needlessly stretched thanks to Statham magically showing up at the end of the sequence.

The plot lacked any real stakes in this movie unlike in the previous couple of movies where there was a defined plot destination. Here it just felt like the plot was created in a hurry because something needs to keep the action sequences going.

The ending is perfect though.

The Diesel Statham end fight was quite horrible.  Statham is a good fighter for real, Vin is not.  It really looked like Vin had no idea what he was doing in his choreographed fights.  And he really should have kicked the shit out of Diesel.  The Rock/Statham fight was good though.

Random blurb of thoughts:

I wanted to like it, but it felt unfocused and it felt like it was trying too hard. A little to serious, while being a little to over the top. The moment that pissed me off most was when Naomi and Teji jump out the car before the missile hits and they think they audience is so stupid they go back and play it in rewind so we see them jump out. UGH

The first 45 minutes all I was thinking was DROP the fucking cars out of the plane already. It was painfully slow. No real goal or final destination, we go here, ok, then we have to go here, ok, now dubai, ok.

Why is Jason a separate villain? Its so unneeded, can't Djimon and Jaa be his men. Both of them were wasted. The Jaa nights were a huge plus. This one had extra ass/camel toe shots it seemed, too much.  LOL at the whole end of the last action scene on the parking structure. Dom stomps his way to victory hahahaha and Lettys story with the flashbacks I didn't like.

I hate Iggy or whatever her name is and the UFC chick is so random and can't act at all.

Jumping both Sky Scrappers BLEW my mind. I jumped out my seat, it was too good. The Bus stunt was fun and I loved the sliding down the stairs. The ending with Paul was good, but I almost felt like they were playing it up too much. Liked the tribute at the end though. Im still a Fast fan, but I think its safe to say the best is behind us...

C+ (78)

Hopefully it will grow on me after a bluray viewing.

This was kinda an issue for me but not for these reasons. Felt kinda like a retread of Fast Five, but I took it as a callback and was fine with it

I still loved it but I have to agree with the criticism that they should have better integrated the villains.  The payoff of having Djimon save Statham when the audience was supposed to think he was cornered wasn't worth the mystery of his random appearances up to that point.

It would only have taken a few lines of dialogue from Kurt Russell to solve this problem and you wouldn't have to change anything else about the movie.  During his sales pitch to Dom all he had to say was this.

"Deckard Shaw is a ghost but one of the few things we know about him is that Jakande is a known associate.  If you get close to Jakande, Shaw won't be far behind."

The cast in this was so good, to have Honsou and Statham as villains looked great on paper but as Hollywood said, it was really unnecessary.  Statham is one of the more gifted physical actors out there and what should of happened is that he should have fought Tony Jaa.  I'm not sure why they would in the film, but then again, you can make any plot piece in these movies work.  Statham needed much more of a presence in this film.  His fight with the Rock was one of the best I've seen simply because both men know how to fight IRL.  But the one at the end with Vin was horrible.  Statham had to carry him in that fight.  Ronda Roussey was not good either.  Sure she looks good fighting but she is a horrible actress right now and why would Leddy be able to fight as well as her?

These complaints aside, I liked the movie a lot.  Roman and Tej are hilarious and they have so much chemistry together.  I laughed at pretty much everything Roman did in the movie.  The cars coming out of the plane and the subsequent action sequence that followed, really just blew my mind.  The amount of work that would go into filming that scene is mind blowing.  I'm assuming Tony Jaa was the bad ass who fought Walker all throughout the film and even though he is world class and Walker isn't, they managed to make their fights look believable.

All throughout the film there was a foreboding tone.  Mia kept telling Brian she loved him and visca versa. The script was a work of fiction but as the film was winding down and because we obviously know what happened to Walker, those scenes packed a very, very emotional punch.  The final scene on the beach and then Walker and Vin on the highway, was such a perfect and honest way to end the film.  It put a giant lump in my throat.

The last scene with Statham in prison with Hobbs escorting him there was also cool.  If they do an 8th film and Statham is in it, I hope he is given much more to do.

8/10
