you wouldn't be completely illogical to think that marvel movies will keep getting bigger until an Avengers 3 or 4 reaches Avatar levels WW.

Pfft, that was stupid to think from the start. Avatar is on another level, at least overseas.

Lol at the idiots trying to 'downplay' the success of Avengers 2. Keep hating. These movies will keep coming, and you'll continue to sit angry behind the computer.

Settle down chief

I do wonder if the MCU films are basically emboldening the fans and getting them to go out but capping the ceiling for the big films. So strong retention of fans, but pushing away casual audiences. For Avengers 2, I wonder how many casual audiences were potentially turned off by A)The number of films since 2012 and B ) Not being able to follow what's going on considering there's been 4 films in between.

Since we've never really had a franchise like this, it might be able to explain a bit of why we're seeing a heftier drop than we would with most sequels to giant films.

That's an excellent point that never even dawned on me to be honest. But yeah, it really is a lot to ask the casual audience to keep up with 4 films in between the first TA and the second when you stop and think about it. Not to mention the Agents of SHIELD stuff. I could totally see casuals feeling like they wouldn't be able to follow this one and not even bothering. It's not like a normal sequel, where you just had to see the predecessor to continue the story.

Certainly. Most people don't go to the movies every week or even every month like we do. So asking them to watch three movies (Guardians doesn't really count in this context) in order to understand the new Avengers coming out is a tall task.

OK I'm exaggerating, but many people's expectations to stay flat/slightly decrease from TA DOM and easily beat it WW by 200M or more weren't stupid with what we knew until a couple months ago. As AoU's premiere was approaching it became apparent that there isn't the same excitement as 2012 but before that 1.7-1.8 billion WW wasn't an unrealistic expectation.

And obviously they didn't do that, since none of the 3 came anywhere near TA's gross.

This is a good point. I do wonder if VOD will do well, because people can actually take the time to watch the other movies instead of having to cram them all in before going to see the new one in the theaters.

MovieMan is right, if everyone who saw TA1 was deeply invested in seeing the entirety of the MCU, the previous Phase 2 films would have grossed higher than they did.

It seems that even the MCU is following common blockbuster film franchise patterns. Either build to a peak, or explode out the gate and then either progressively decrease, or plateau and never reach the peak again even if the subsequent entries increase relative to previous ones. MCU has done both (MCU built to TA1, but TA1 exploded out the gate as relative to the Avengers films itself.)
