The Top 100 Film Characters of All Time Countdown Thread - Top 20 incoming!

Recommended Posts

96th: Dorothy - The Wizard of Oz - Judy Garland

21pts - 3 votes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSZxmZmBfnU

Finally free of the shackles of the 20 point club, Dorothy comes storming onto the scene with a nosebleed-inducing 21. One of the reasons why I am not sure is Scarlett O'Hara is the oldest character on this list without committing to an extra 90 seconds or more of googling, Dorothy is another timeless character from the 30s and ur first musical character.

The Wizard of Oz was a triumph of cinema upon release as well as being a pioneer of the big budget bomb that Hollywood would over the years build its reputation upon, and Dorothy was the glue that made all the other characters work. She may not be the most memorable thing about the film, but the film couldn't work without a good Dorothy and that is what Garland gave us.

95th: Cady Heron - Mean Girls - Lindsay Lohan

22pts - 1 vote

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUDVbqHl2ko

Of course no top 100 best characters list would be complete without at least one Lindsay Lohan role and like how Dicaprio used the role of Jack Dawson as a springboard to bigger and better things, Lohan went from Mean Girls to the dizzying heights of ... well she almost made that porn biopic type thing didn't she?

Trying to be serious though, this was one of the 5 'one vote wonders' one this list which is a sign that this is a role that most people do not think of when it comes to their favourite characters of all time, but the odd individual here and there rates very highly and hey, I gave 14 points to Crocodile Dundee so nobody is perfect :)

Cady Heron is one of 5 Mean Girls characters to receive votes of any kind in the making of this list.

Who else?

I can confidently confirm that at least one of those has indeed made the top ten. I can also say that at least one has not managed to do so. :)

In our first official interlude, let us have a look at those lonely champions who only managed a solitary point. Those annoying and pointless souls that wasted literally minutes of my time, typing their names up, only for them to have no impact on the final standings in any way shape or form. :)

95th: Dr Ian Malcolm - Jurassic Park - Jeff Goldblum

20pts - 2 votes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PLvdmifDSk

And now it's time to remember that magical period in box office history where Jeff Goldblum kind of became the biggest draw on the planet. Jurassic Park was a film unlike anything we'd really seen before and was a true tour de force of what both CGI and animatronics were capable of. It's to the full credit of the cast then, that they were not completely overshadowed by the effects on display like some could have been (I'm looking at you, stars of Avatar!)

Ian Malcolm was the brightest human character in the film and it's probably only the less than stellar 'Lost World' that stopped him potentially climbing even a little higher on the list.

For reference, Sam Neill finished in 112th, the T-Rex 243rd, the Raptors 314th and finally John Hammond was 356th.

  <_<

My list counted right? I didn't have to PM it did I?

Your list has been counted now, having it lost on page 2 with now proud declaration of getting it finished or PM of the list meant I kind of didnt see it, sorry. Have triple checked every post now and it was the only list I missed so it's not a big disaster.

Just means that I now technically started with 104th not 101st and one character already written up needs to disappear and reappear later. :)

Sorry about that :)

94th: The Joker - Batman - Jack Nicholson

22pts - 2 votes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63iuB-cSY7Q

And onto one of the most infamous villains in comic book... scratch that, all of cinema. The Joker is one of those roles that only a handful of actors could pull off well. Blending sinister, crazy and (to different extents per incarnation) comedy is a very hard balance to strike and Jack truly created the quintessential Joker or his generation with a performance in the role that many believed would never be bettered. Of course that is a story for a different ranking.

Nicholson is also the first actor on our list to be making the first of multiple appearances. With 4 characters in total receiving votes, I will not give away how many beat Joker and how many didn't :). this may not be the last time we visit the Batmanverse either ;)

93rd: Truman Burbank - The Truman Show - Jim Carrey

22pts - 2 votes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9lBvg5clr0

The highest finish for a Carrey character is his portrayal of Truman Burbank in a film that when looked at 17 years later was lightyears ahead of its time. This was one of Carrey's first non-flat out comedic roles and he really hits a home run giving the role his trademark enery and gusto, without going into overacting overdrive.

It is arguable that Carrey has acted better in roles since this one, but for me personally, he has never been more watchable as an on screen character than he was here and although I've never seen The Apostle, Ulee's Gold or Wag the Dog and I of course know the greatness of Robert Duvall, Peter Fonda and Dustin Hoffman, I enjoyed this performance about as much as I enjoyed anything i can remember back from 1998.

92nd: Hazel - The Fault in Our Stars - Shailene Woodley

22pts - 2 votes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VVsWpE7Z1g

Sadly there's not a lot I can say about this character as she comes from a film I hope I never ever have to watch in any shape or form (to quote a friend of mine: "I don't understand the reasoning of Hollywood to make a film where cancer is the hero.").

It's a shame really as John Green seems pretty cool from all the Mental Floss stuff, but there's probably more chance of me giving another chapter of the Twilight Saga a chance than this, so if you like the film, congrats! It made the list, I can't really add anything of note.

91st: Harry Potter - Harry Potter - Daniel Radcliffe

22pts - 3 votes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tx1XIm6q4r4

I'd probably say this is the first real shock on this list as I would have expected Harry to score higher than 91st but I'm here to be surprised. As much as I hate how badly the series ended in my eyes with the final two abominations, I still believe the casting director of this franchise deserves a medal.

To have to take punts at 11 or 12 year old kids in the hope they'll still be viable actors at 18 was a massive task and they really pulled it off. Radcliffe is Harry Potter, he owned that role and held an entire multi-billion dollar franchise on his shoulders. Imagine if he'd gone all Macauley Culken at say aged 16, how fucked would the studio have been? Great casting, great actor and great performances.
