Tuesday Actuals: JW 24.3M | DOWN GOES TDK TUESDAY | Not the Spielberg, Cameron, or Nolan thread!

If I'm Universal I hire a trustworthy scribe and get Gore Verbinski behind the camera. Just don't allow him the freedom he had with Lone Ranger. The guy knows how to work with a charismatic, charming and goofy lead. Did so in bringing the Pirates trilogy to life. Also, knows how to helm a movie with some of the more impressive visual effects, action set pieces and epic scope. Did so with Dead Man's Chest especially. Like I said, just keep a leash on him.

But tell him not to make the movies 2.5 to 3 hours long. The "normal" 2 hour runtime is part of what makes JP4 such a crowd pleaser IMHO. I'm not against long movies, but I don't think they are usually necessary for summer action movies.

Yup. Like I said, just keep him in check. Something along the runtime of The Curse of the Black Pearl would be fine.

Are some people honestly arguing that JW doesn't "deserve" to make this kind of money but TA did? Give me a break.

Some people here are calling JW "overrated", even though the general consesens here is a B/B minus. Jealousy over the gross is all it is.

Hell, in a perfect world...get Abrams to direct with Spielberg producing.

I don't think any director with a name would do the job, knowing, that the possible plotdevelopment in this world is not wide open at all. They had that problem before in 1997, they will have it now

As individuals one cannot criticize audiences tastes. So "deserve" has got nothing to do with success. If the audiences are willing to spend their hard earned money, who are we to disapprove their choices.

My favorite Leo movie is Blood Diamond which was a below average grosser. Just means that it did not click with the general auds like it did with me.

Its Not about deserving. Its just that the movie is not exceptional - neither exceptionally good nor a landmark or cinematic achievement. Only exceptional films gross big and should gross big. And this is not my opinion for Gods sake. Just read the last para (along with the rest of it too) of this following post of mine -

I think this is gonna make 170m atleast and possibly 200m after that. Still beating titanic or Avengers is the best one should hope for.

Its impossible for this to beat Avatar because this is simply not as good or groundbreaking a film! I liked it but this is not good enough to become the highest grossing ever. This actually doesn't even deserve this much, not that deservings got anything to do with it. Out of the previous very big grossers Avatar was groundbreaking and a land mark achievment in visual effects. Titanic was a very good and easily moving and lovable movie that was also a achievment in visual effects and CGI. Avengers was a movie followed by mega-budgeted marketing (the previous MCU movies) and had the major novelty of having these loved heroes all together. It was also very good too. The Dark Knight was a very good film, with wondorous acting and the death of the best actor in the film. It was the best movie ever of the genre whose evn avg movies make a lot. The original Jurrasic Park was again a landmark achievement in visual effects. Plus pretty realistic and high-budgeted dinos for the first time which also gave it a major novelty factor. It was very good and widely loved too. E.T, Star Wars etc, etc all were actually exceptional movies. Yes shitty movies make quite a lot of money these days and JW is actually above avg and with nostalgia factor butits not exceptional and if it ends up becoming the highest grosser ever than i will finally lose all faith in people and their choices.

Note - all that i wrote about films is the critics and experts and also, slightly, general audience's view not my personal so don't reply with such a comment as - well i didn't think avatar/titanic was any good or a cinematic achievment.

It features a fully functional dinosaur theme park, fulfilling the imagination of everyone that saw Jurassic Park. That is a fantastic hook for a blockbuster, and just as big as having four superheros team up.

All comes down to opinion. I thought the Avengers was nothing special and a typical blockbuster.

That's what i am stressing. Its not about personal opinions I am talking about!! Its the opinions of critics and experts that i am stating and not personal opinions.

Even that one is 2:15 without credits, which is pushing it. Depp's incredible performance keeps it from feeling too long.

Rango's 107 minutes... Awesome creature design, fantastic visual milieu, wonderful action beats, weird vibes that suit Pratt well. But, yeah, it's animated. Still, it's my favorite Verbinski film to date.

This. Plus TA was the epitome of a prepackaged corporate product that was planned years in advance and completely calculated form the start. The notion that's it's more spiritually or artistically deserving of uber success than JW is ridiculous.

But who says their opinions are right? Generally I agree with RT, but there are movies I like and they don't and vice versa.

Find me one cinephile, movie historian or film critic that thinks TA is among the greatest films ever made and I'll find you a unicorn.
