Weekend Estimates: JW: 102 IO 91...RTH: Sun JW 38.3 | IO 25.3 with possible upsides PG 287, possible 107M for JW weekend

Recommended Posts

Day After Tomorrow adjusts to about 90, so it's going to beat that. That will be one hell of a tough record to break in the future.

Won't happen for a loooooooooong time. Took more than a decade just to beat Day After Tomorrow (crazy that it held that record for so long with every other opening record being shattered every few years)

Last week, we were so terrified of how JW Would affect Inside Out.

IO is about to have the highest opening weekend (possibly adjusted) for an original animated film.

And JW is still making over $100m.

It's weekends like this that remind us why we love what we do.

Titanic was "written off" in the sense that it was thought impossible to be profitable as a costume drama that cost 200m.

AVTR was never "written off" in any way, shape, or form.  It had a massive amount of hype and an ace marketing campaign (save for the big misstep of a lackluster teaser which the burgeoning fanboy community snarked at) which included release date features on 60 Minutes, Oprah, and the most viewed iTunes trailer of all time.  AVTR was exactly what it was supposed to be from the start: a colossal sci-fi/action smash.

But that's what I mean, the Internet was vicious with Avatar and I remember a lot of predictions at the Box Office Mojo forums that it would flop. Cameron blew them out of the water. When JP4 was announced it seems like there was a lot of negative reaction to the very idea of another JP movie. Glad the movie itself turned out to be a legitimately great sequel to the original.

I was following AVTR diligently - and JW since last summer - and none of this matches up with my observations.

AVTR was one of the most hyped non-CB movies of all time, easily, and all estimates had it breaking the December record, which it missed by only a fraction.

Maybe you remember random internet comments on Twitter or message boards.  That's not what I reference.

Since MOS dropped less than 1%, and Godzilla increased last year, very realistic. Probably won't be sub-5%, but it should still have a great hold.

As long as Saturday stays at 40M or above, the second weekend record is pretty much a goner. A FD drop above 15% is unlikely.

It's Father's Day Sunday. Action and sci-fi "dad" films have sub-10% drops to slight increases.

Awesome!!

Can't believe I can be THIS happy to see JW doing well considering I was one of TA biggest fans.

But JP was the first movie I enjoyed enough to see it twice in the theatre, using my lunch money so that's a big deal. Nostalgia is such a powerful thing.

This weekend is so phenomenal! Seeing Inside Out's 90M+ OW performance and JW getting the 2nd weekend crown in the same weekend is why I love following box office!

This 2 week streak is going down in the history books.

Agreed.

The flare, her running in heels, her tank top, her sweat and her look, her entire look and attitude in that scene is a thing of legend. Add in Trex's glowing eyes and the look he gives IREX when they meet, it's just too epic. It will go down as one of the best crowd pleasing moments in film history.

Could not agree more

The T-Rex glowing eyes will go down as one of the most iconic scenes in any film

Simply thrilling loved every second.
