Tomorrowland is the joke of the Summer. 190M budget, 202M WW total. And the movie is complete nonsense. At least he did Ghost Protocol which means he does have talent... but damn, if he didn't do that movie before, his career would have been over

Wasn't a big fan of Tomorrowland, but I sincerely hope that Pixels becomes the bigger joke of the summer.

With a 90M budget, it should make its money back easily WW. Tomorrowland will probably be the biggest bomb this summer.

With a 90m budget, Pixels has a much lower bar for "success".

Sony has a lot less going on than Disney though (LOL, understatement of the century), so they need this to be an actual success (and not just middling) much more than Disney did with Tomorrowland.

As for being a joke though - I'm pretty sure this will be a bigger joke to the media just because nobody seems to like Adam Sandler, whereas many critics were rooting for Tomorrowland for Brad Bird.

88M apparently

Sony, the studio behind “Pixels,” is predicting a muted debut of roughly $25 million for the comedy, while analysts are pegging an opening of $30 million. If the film fails to hit $30 million it could have difficulty being profitable unless foreign audiences lift it into the black. Bringing together Pac-Man, Donkey Kong and Tetris together in one film was pricey, setting the studio back $88 million before marketing and distribution costs are taken into account. Sony will roll out the film in 3,500 theaters domestically and 47 overseas markets with the hopes that the videogame concept and colorful special effects will attract audiences across the globe.

The CGI is simplistic (on purpose) and Columbus has a lot of experience with mixing live-action and CGI, plus his movies aren't exactly "stylistic". Combine that with Sandler who's pay has got to have lessened since his early days, along with tax credits for shooting wherever that wasn't NYC or LA and I could see how they were able to finagle a low budget.

Can't help but feel good for Sony on that account.

Are Pixels and Paper Towns the same audience?

No.

Paper Towns is pre-teen/teen girls

Pixels is families and older adults nostalgic for video games

One stereotypically rushes out for previews/OD, while the other generally is backloaded.

$1.8 million for Pixels and $3.3 million for Paper Towns would still mean roughly the same OW since families can't really go on a Thursday night, even during the summer.
