I wonder if marvel is starting to get nervous?

I'm sure those who have little to no understanding of business in general or have over-inflated expectations are getting nervous, everyone is is either satisfied or relieved.  If CA:CW makes under 250, you might start to hear rumblings that genuinely indicate nervousness.

No one can argue that Paper Towns did well when even the head of Fox distribution said he was "Mystified".

“I’m really somewhat mystified,” said Chris Aronson, domestic distribution chief at Fox. “It’s something we’re going to have to look at and review on a post-mortem basis and find out why we didn’t get more people in.”

I realize I am miles away from this movie's demographic, but I had no idea "Paper Towns" was even coming out until a few days ago.  I saw no publicity for it whatsoever.  And I've seen "Ant-Man" three times over the past 2 weeks at 3 different venues - I don't remember seeing a poster and definitely no trailer for it.

A hundred Sony movies flop and nobody panics. One Marvel movie under-performs and everyone looses their minds.

It's the difference between an athlete who wins the gold after no one expected him to be in the top 10, versus an athlete who wins silver after everyone expected him to win gold.

I knew because I follow release dates, but I swear I have not seen a trailer for this in a theater since May. I saw it attached to AOU, PP2 and Tomorrowland, then nothing. Did anybody see it at the front of JW, for example?

Doctor Strange really was as unnecessary as they come. At least Ant-Man has an excuse in the form of Edgar Wright. Strange is all on Feige's hands.

Careful, it's highly likely that Dr. Strange will be one of the ways the MCU will link the Avengers' world to the GOTG world.

Fun to see all the butthurt Sandler fanboys attacking the critics for being snobs.

Problem with that is audiences seem to like Sandler nowdays little more then the critics.

It will be along time before Sandler will get another 90 Million dollar budget for one of his films after this. Probably some finger pointing at SONY right now over who greenlighted funding this Sandler fiasco.

Marvel Studios has been pulling in between 1.4-1.8 billion a year for the last four years.

and they only release 2 movies per year.

Not bad for a sub-studio that people considered risky 7 years ago.

They should remain a golden goose for Disney well into the future.

Civil War - 1.2 billion

Dr. Strange - 500 m

2016 total - 1.7 billion

GotG vol 2 - 900 m

Thor 3 - 600 m

2017 total - 1.5 billion

Infinity War 1 - 1.2 billion

Black Panther - 450 m

Captain Marvel - 450 m

2018 total - 2.1 billion

Context is everything.

All the box office analysis articles are pretty much skewing really negative this week

This weekend marks the most anemic chart-topping performance since late April when “Furious 7,” then in its fourth week of release, bested all challengers with $17.8 million.

Really near catastrophic for Paper Towns.  I know the budget is low so it saves a LITTLE face but man, I was being conservative in expecting a 22 million opening, but even I didn't think it could go that low.  The frontloadedness of it all is just shocking, regardless of the fan base.  I don't know if this is enough to put Looking for Alaska on hold but I think at the very least they keep the budget for it under 10 million and don't make an option on An Abundance of Katherines.  Also shows what a true perfect storm FIOS was.

I saw Paper Towns yesterday and I actually liked it more than the book (which left a really sour taste in my mouth).  But Southpaw, DAMN.  I was not expecting to love it the way I did.  Gyllenhall is truly a force to be reckoned with right now.  Glad to see it over performing.

The budget of PT is 12 M.

still though.  there's a VERY real chance this closer under 30 million.  Maybe in the end the studio will break even with ancillary streams but truly a nightmare scenario for the Green team.
