Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween | October 12 2018 | Sony | Jack Black may not return

Recommended Posts

Leave it to Sony to mess this up. The first ended up being a legitimate WOM hit after it seemed like something no one would care about and set up some actual potential for a franchise. But now they ditch the whole cast of the first - right when Black is on a new high after Jumanji - ditch the very promising horrorland concept, and now it's called "Slappy Halloween?" What the actual fuck? Oh Sony, even on their comeback streak they still insist on Sony-isms.

A bad Goosebumps movie should have been a hit. Somehow, Sony made a good Goosebumps movie that only did ok. Instead of capitalising on that they played with their thumbs for two years and then rushed a movie into production with none of the cast of the original (Black is only voicing Slappy apparently).

They really could have had something here.

So instead of making it a Greatest Hits Of All Stine's Monsters movie like the first movie (which I loved), the sequel is going to be like an example of one of the Slappy books?

This isn't a bad thing. The plot is literally a book RL Stine could have written as part of the Slappy sequels.

I still don't get why Jack Black's only doing the voice of Slappy in this. He just got a second wind of goodwill from Jumanji, but instead of Sony capitalizing on that, he's just relegated to a voice role with a bunch of no-name kids as the stars? At the very least, Sony should have kept 13 Reasons Why fresh off the success of that show.

Definitely looks like it's missing the charm of the first one. Goosebumps was one of my favourite family movies of 2015, this definitely does look like a direct-to-Teletoon knock-off.

House with a Clock in its Walls looks like a better version of this.
