peludo
I do not dare to give an accurate figure. This can be ENORMOUS or disappointing
kayumanggi
... or just a mid-sized hit. The stars here are the aliens ha ha.
peludo
ID4 already did $500m OS in 1996. That is ENORMOUS. Asian markets should make huge numbers. IMHO, billion is in play for this.
KP1025
Box office was quite different back when ID4 was released. Not a lot of huge CGI blockbusters on the scale that we have now. I don't think the OS number will double but should see a nice increase due to China. Enough to hit $1 billion WW but probably not much higher in my opinion.
peludo
^ Sure. I mean 1 billion WW, not OS

Olive
July releases always have horrible China release dates.
JJ-8
This is so hard to predict. Tough call. It's a sequel to a well loved film. ++ Emerich in his domain. ++ No smith from one of his iconic roles -? 20 years since --? Maybe? Was massive in 96 but the market is so different these days. It's Sfx in its day were so impressive. The one liners. Gonna be a hard act to follow. But I think it can overcome things. As long as it doesn't go too campy. Early predict of 750 OS. Domestic should pull it above 1b WW.
MrFanaticGuy34
July releases always have horrible China release dates. Is it mainly because they're afraid that China don't want a Hollywood release to dominate over a local one or what?
Olive
Is it mainly because they're afraid that China don't want a Hollywood release to dominate over a local one or what? July to august is local protection period, that's the time when domestic movies to take charge of summer holidays.
MrFanaticGuy34
July to august is local protection period, that's the time when domestic movies to take charge of summer holidays. Well, they can't move it's China release to a release date way too late to September after it's U.S release. Otherwise it won't do well either. Remember MI5, anybody? KP1025
It might still get lucky and get the tail end of August like Terminator 5, but really they don't have a choice but to accept the release date (however bad) China gives them or risk no release there at all. CaptainJackSparrow
I think this could be in the running for highest grossing OS hit this year. The first did huge, plus this seems like it will deliver on huge disaster scenes.

Probably all depends on China whether this can be the highest grossing title of the year (and the other OS-markets have to deliver too)
John Marston
So apparently this is flopping overseas
wildphantom
Hong Kong apparently rebounded. This is going to be real interesting one to follow this weekend. In my opinion people are not apathetic, but more waiting to see if people say it's good.
John Marston
if this doesn't do well a third film won't be made and this is a series that ends of a cliffhanger. Oof
