Your Avatar reminded me about something that really bothered me about Avatar the movie when it came out.

 

That is, for a movie that was supposed to be an advancement in VFX, it had some really clunky and horrible CGI in places.

Well, for IronJimbo to break down, A2 doesnt necessarily need to make less 2B. This is his projection quoted from another thread.

 

Less than 1.8b is a disaster

1.8b to 2.1b is an extreme underpeformance.

2.1b to 2.4b is far less than expected

2.4b to 2.78b is disappointing

2.78b to 3b is ok

3b to 3.3b is expected

3.3b to 3.7b is great

3.7b to 4b is fanastic

4b.. pack your bags honey we are off to Pandora

 

But as I've said in that thread, this shows IronJimbo is a rather fair player. He doesn't have double standards for films he loves or hates like some other BOT users do. He's harsh on TLJ's boxoffice performance, but he's a lot harsher on Avatar sequels.

I swear the only thought people put into A2s gross is "sequels do worse" and thats it. I don't blame you lot though, you see Avatar and Titanic standing at the very top amongst cbm and franchise films from the last 5 years, seemingly untouchable relics from the past. Its not fair you think, also this jimbo guy is annoying as hell! He keeps mentioning how they deserve to be at the top and how they made it there on there own merit rather than other peoples past works. How they were both revolutionary films with some of the greatest legs of all time that people loved. How they ARE the highest grossing films of all time in the known universe.

I think if it becomes the second highest grossing film of all time I could spin it that way, but it would still be very dissappointing. Jim strives for innvocation and excellence... Below 2b is where I would be shocked and probably live in the dark in my bed for a month eating only canned food stacked next to my bed. Fortunately that isn't possible, for my own sake.

Don't worry. Jimmy Boy got Disney (known as the GREATEST marketing machine in the world) behind his back. It will AT LEAST become the 2nd highest grossing film of all time.

You're the one who says that 2.8B would only be "okay" for Avatar 2, so I imagine a scenario of under 2B would send you into screeching hibernation.

 

And no, it's not impossible. It was impossible for Ultron to drop under 1.5B WW or for TLJ to drop under 600M DOM... until it wasn't. Nothing is impossible at the box office.
