I think Smith helped the O/S numbers quite a bit.

And as well as I Tonya has done it won't end up with Concussion or Collateral Beauty numbers domestically... and Robbie's presence did nothing for the dramas Z is For Zachariah  or Goodbye Christopher Robin.

Isn't that true for most actors when they appear in non franchise films. Their name alone isn't enough to make a film a hit. Margot Robbie has been doing some interesting projects and I wouldn't be surprised if Mary Queen of Scots does well.

Sure, but my point is that while Will Smith's brand isn't close to what it used to be his name still brings in a audience, even in poorly reviewed  or unappealing dramas and O/S like Cruise he's still a very solid draw.

With Sony about to give us the superhero masterpiece "Venom", DC responds strongly. Here comes the Joker with Todd Phillips at the helm !

Can you believe it ? It is Todd Philips (the director of the Hangover trilogy) ! WB hears us complain about DCEU movies being way too dark and serious and is gonna inject so much fun into the Joker movie. We will LAUGH all the way throughout the movie. HAHAHA !

News out today that Chris McKay is in talks to make DUNGEONS & DRAGONS for Paramount since NIGHTWING is a low priority for WB/DC.

http://www.tracking-board.com/with-nightwing-less-of-a-priority-for-dc-films-chris-mckay-enters-talks-to-direct-dungeons-dragons-for-paramount/

So we've gone from we're casting NW to eh I'll spend years making this other blockbuster before I do NW.

Welcome to development hell NW, say hi to GOTHAM CITY SIRENS and the DEADSHOT movie while you're there.

Ah yes, Flashpoint. The movie that will put BvS,SS, Justice League to shame with how low it can go on RT.

It's like doing Civil War as the first Captain America film after The Avengers. Granted Flashpoint does tie into the origin of Barry Allen but for a franchise that repeatedly has bitten off more it can chew this is an odd choice.

For a rabid Cameron fanboy to accuse anybody else of being smug is the funniest thing ever.

Hardly 'smug' when you're the top of the mountain. I'd say being overly proud of being number 1 almost paradoxically impossible.

To defend him, sometimes when you’re the janitor you can’t totally remove the smell/stains after the toilets overfill.

One would say that being proud at any level of anything you have absolutely nothing to do with is already being way to proud, not even sure what people mean by the word "proud" when talking about other people movie success.

I imagine anyone talking like this is joking (they are right ?)

DC has had 4 out of 5 of their movies get mixed to poor reception, and they're still averaging over 700m worldwide. They're wearing down the brand for sure but I think they still have a bit of breathing room, just can't keep spending BvS/JL money.

The upside of that is that it indicates there is a huge audience out there just waiting to spend money on a movie they like.   The people come back quick.   Just at Star Wars fans running back after the Prequels when TFA came out.   Some of them are unhappy now but they'll be back the minute there is a SW film they like.

DC fans hang in there, the Marvel fans maybe acting smug right now, but you can just leave it to Jim to show them their place (and yours)

I know it's not wise to doubt Cameron, but I can't help feeling that he'd better deliver something special with the next Avatar.   Marvel is killing it right now in an unprecedented way commercially, critically, and in popular culture.   Maybe I'm off base, but Marvel seems to be more ingrained in pop culture than Avatar at the moment.

name a stand alone film (original, non sequel, non book, non franchise) with bigger "pop culture" from this century.

This pop culture meme has been regurgitated endlessly ever since Scott Meddleson's article, of course franchises are going to have more memes and toys, who cares.. it doesn't relate to box office in any quantifiable way.

Frozen is disney princess... I can't think of any others.

Avatar is utterly irrelevant in pop culture. Titanic, despite being over 20 years old, is still more iconic.

yeah everyone loves Titanic, who made it?
