I found a thread by CJohn from before the first THG was released. Under Percy Jackson!!

Most said no. But the average prediction in response was like 50/150. This is still a very successful franchise. Let's keep some perspective. ;)

No one is denying that the franchise is successful, but after the first movie the "normal" and expectations get set accordingly, and strengthened further after Catching Fires performance. The franchise sputtered to a close instead of the Big Bang closure most expected.

Just watched The Hunger Games again on TV. What a brilliant film that was. Box office wise films do not operate based on some magical law. Mockingjay was always predicted by book fans to be a very hard sell. Then you split it into two parts. The Games element was not something frivolous in the first two films. What the games did was to make for an extremely compelling story. The story of Katniss becoming the "Mockingjay" and about war, politics and revolution was never going to match that.

Because those predictions were not based on anything. Overlooking that the HGs came out of no where (no one was predicting that much) Mockingjay is content wise nothing like the first two books. On top of that what was considered "normal" was in fact unprecedented for that type of film. $400 million in the US is huge. Setting that number as an expectation was never remotely realistic. Maybe a single MJ film could have gotten close.

It's interesting to note that the Hunger Games movie franchise numbers completely follow what the readers think of the books.

The first book is beloved, it hooked people into the whole thing.

The Second book is adored, fans favorite book by far.

Mockingjay is a dividing book to say the least, loved by some, hated by others. You have to understand that what happens in the first act of MJ, the book.film, is SO anti climatic that it made people to not root for Katniss as she become mopey & depressed until she become this Kind of Joan of Arc figure people expected but then the author killed Katniss' spirit even more by other events so the book/movie is grim & dark & not uplifting in ANY way.

Dividing the least favorite book into two parts was asking for trouble and it showed.

Maybe they should have changed more things from the book but the success of the first film prevented them from doing that.

The last Potter/Twilight books gave what the fans wanted and were up lifting.

Disagree, just because there's nothing interesting right now. Doesn't mean that it's going to be like that forever.

Well, not necessarily "forever", but for a long time, yes. Audiences are tired of YA now. There's almost as much YA films as there are superhero films. The only truly successful YA franchises were the big 3. Box office shows that the YA trend is dissipating (i.e. Insurgent, Scorch Trials). Lord knows what the BO will be for 5th wave.

Yeah I heard over the years was that Mockingjay was the worst book.

Maybe this drop off was inevitable.

I wonder how much room at the top there is for the biggest superhero movies.

It's going to be like 2 Harry Potters (Avengers, Justice League).

And lots of Hunger Games (GotG, Batman, Superman, Captain America, X-men, Spider-man).
