The Empire Strikes Back is widely considered to be not only the best Star Wars movie, but one of the best movies of all time. It still decreased massively from A New Hope.

Only in retrospect though. At time of release, it didn't have the greatest reviews.

Even then, look at how the Special Edition releases performed. It was still the same, and by that time the general consensus had been reached.
