As far as mega blockbusters go (where the previous installment grossed 400m adjusted or more) DOM-wise, there are only a handful of occasions where the sequel outgrossed the previous one. Here's all the ones that I could find, listed in reverse chronological order from the release of the sequel:

TLWJP to JW (429.7 to 680.6)

Uhh...

Arguments could be made against TFA, JW, TS3, and TPM belonging on the list considering the gap between installments, and against CF considering how close the two are; CF could very well be below THG in attendance.

You could also argue against JW because JP3 happened between it and TLW. I know people don't LIKE it, but still. It did happen.

Flip a coin.

I think it will.

However it depends on how well it holds on the next few weekends.

You are right. I misread the list. I would remove that entry from the list, however, I can't seem to edit my previous post right now...

try it with different background themes (down left corner of the website), there seems to be a bug since the software provider updated

I can not edit whilst using BOT Chameleon, but it helps with other details, so I change back and ... ah, and in case you have or get problems to change pages: hit refresh

they work on it

So...

TFAs run is basically over.  Time to move on to the next big thing people.

Episode 8 OW predictions anyone?  Can it crack 250M? Can we open a thread for the Ep8 OW predictions now? [emoji38]

I know it's 16-17 months away (if it doesn't get delayed), but lets face it, nobody cares about anything else until then.

BvS and Civil War just aren't going to do it for me I'm afraid.

TFA run over? What???

Another 200-250 mln on the table...

It's funny in all of the comparisons of TFA to the biggest hits ever, which is fair, because it's where it is landing, sometimes it's easy to lose sight of how stupidly ridiculous the numbers look when you think about them compared to your average film. I mean movies that everyone who watches movies talked about this last year, like Kingsman and Mad Max, barely made more than TFA did in just its first DAY. And after OW, the gross was already in the top 100 of all time. Just crazy stuff like that is mind-boggling. The Hateful Eight will struggle to come anywhere close to what TFA made in just one day.

Heck, poor Fantastic Four's final box office total didn't match just the previews for Star Wars. Ouch.

I remember when I first saw Titanic hit $600M at the end of its run and just thought about how much money that was historically. A big blockbuster, BIG, was half of that total. In 1998 making $300 million was, I'm pretty sure, still good for the bottom of the Top 10 of all time. And now TFA will be comparable in the sense that at $950M, half of that gross -- $475M -- would be an astonishing total for almost any film released. The numbers just... amaze.

disagree, most average movie goers didn't care all that much for Mad Max.

How... do you make a prediction like that lol. Those numbers are incredible! Nailed the Monday perfectly, for instance, second weekend was almost right on. That's some impressive stuff. Wow.

Great to see TFA going over 90M on its third weekend.

let's guess from this point (conservative way)

6.5M (-70%)

7.5M (+18%)

5.7M (-25%)

5.5M (-3%)

12.5M

19.5M

12M (44M 4th weekend / 810 - 815M DOM cume)

4M

5M

4M

4M

9M

15M

12M

7M (43M MLK weekend / around 875M)

IMHO, 125M after this point is doable. And if it finally manages to get a BP nomination, legs will be even better.

I looked at the weekly drops if it follows RotK.  I am hesitant to say that $1B is locked especially having not seen the movie yet (last 3 times I tried it was sold out trying again Tuesday), but based on numbers alone and the past patterns I see no reason for this to drop harsher than RotK at least until oscar season. Underlined are actuals

Spoiler

$390,856,054
$261,109,529
$103,399,373*
$53,250,677
$41,588,779
$25,909,809
$19,639,635
$15,672,429
$17,271,017
$10,587,133
$9,316,677
$11,403,613
$8,313,234
$5,312,156
$2,826,067
$1,579,772
$1,308,051
$898,631
$747,661
$607,848
$426,710
$364,837
$291,504
$114,270

$982,795,468 final.  The third week will be better than this formula shows, but weaker oscar weeks should counter act that (unless it crashes and only makes $13m for the next weeks weekdays), this projection also puts it at $876m on Jan, 28.  We could be looking at $900m before the start of February.

Same model with 3rd week estimated based on $90m 3rd weekend, $21m Sunday and ROTK's daily drops gives $1.013B

You know if this movie gets some big Oscar nomination it would REALLY help its box office going forward.

Sadly, that seems like a long shot. It really should get some though. It is a LOT better than most of the other films out there up for Oscar consideration.
