You need a cinema culture as well, similar number of people live in India as well but biggest day ever is barely $25mn.

China has a nassive amount of screens/seats now allowing for such a huge day.

India has a huge cinema culture, it sells more tickets annually. Over 2b but at an ATP of under $1

No it don't. It hasn't sold even 1 billion tickets any year this decade. The ATP is $1.5-2.

Cinema culture is good in South India but North India, i.e. biggest Industry in India Bollywood, its poor. The biggest Bollywood hit in last 18 years has sold only 35 million tickets out of 1200 million population.

With multiple languages and film industries making their own films in local languages, the nationwide BO will be smaller for any particular film.  Because of multiple "Bollywoods" in India, the result is 2000 films made in a year compare to 686 in china.  Again, spreading the ticket sales out

Bollywood movies in new theaters will average $1.5-2.  However, many local films are in makeshift theater charging just $.5.  I saw PK for 90 cents in Rishikesh

I have seen multiple sources over the years state that India is #1 in admissions at over 2b.  Here is Wiki for 2017.

Fake exaggeration, that's it. Bollywood last year sold around 310 million tickets.

The other two big industries Tollywood and Kollywood sold around 270mn tickets combined.

Hollywood sold around 80mn.

That totals 660mn approx and these 4 controls around 75-80% of country Box Office.

The total box office was ₹11,000 crore or $1.65 Billion with total admissions around 850 million.

Final presales:

Monster Hunt 2 - 294.1M

Detective Chinatown 2 - 174.2M

Monkey King 3 - 85.1M

Operation Red Sea - 56.7M

Boonie Bears 4 - 42.1M

Totals: 678.4M Presales and ~355,000 showings. This makes the day, in just presales remember the following:

  • 2nd best single day ever (behind 806m, in front 645m and 603m)
  • Most showing in a single day (needs checking fully, but has beaten every day I've checked by 30,000)
  • MH2 has the 4th best opening day for a single film, just in presales
  • MH2 has the 13th best single day for a single film, again just in presales

A presale multiplier of just 1.47x gets February 16th to 1B single day gross, first time ever!

EDIT: Also should note that Maoyan is forecasting the following totals:

Monster Hunt 2 - 4.297B ($677m)

Detective Chinatown 2 - 2.525B ($398m)

Monkey King 3 - 869m ($137m)

Operation Red Sea - 1.955B ($308m)

Boonie Bears 4 - 704m ($111m)

Final Presales:

Crazy Alien - 197.6M - (98,856 shows)

Pegasus - 143.1M - (101,979 shows)

The New King of Comedy - 138.1M - (93,278 shows)

The Wandering Earth - 82.4M - (53,828 shows)

Boonie Bears - 42.8M - (19,986 shows)

Peppa Pig - 38.4M - (28,929 shows)

Integrity - 35.9M - (40,308 shows)

The Knight of Shadows - 35.7M - (37,618 shows)

Totals: 718.7M Presales and ~475,000 showings. Best ever presales and showings for a single day, beating last years. The additional 120k showings is rather mindboggling.

Should handily beat last year, solid chance at ¥1.5B single day, easily beating the 1.277B last year. Also last year increased from 355k showings in presales to 392k showings in actuals. Possible that total showings at end of day will be over 500k.

Maoyan is forecasting the following totals: (remember these were very wrong last year)

Crazy Alien - 3.646B

Pegasus - 2.599B

The New King of Comedy - 2.496B

The Wandering Earth - 2.335B

Boonie Bears - 600M

Peppa Pig - 359M

Integrity - 570M

The Knight of Shadows - 631M

No doubt this will rapidly change.

Alita (9 days out)

Midnight - 244k

OD - 1.73m (44.16%) (19703 shows)

Sat - 863k

Sun - 524k

Not sure which movie to compare this to or how many days has it been out on presales. But below are some recent comparisons

9 days out

Bumblebee OD - 3.3 (Bumblebee was already 11 days into its PS and had 43k shows or so compared to only 19k for Alita)

Venom OD - 2.99 (Venom had 41k shows at this point which was its 1st or 2nd day of PS I think)

Aquaman - Not started PS yet

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - 1.74m (this is the closest I can find. Guardians went on to have about 28.5m total PS)

Decent increase today as well, although the show count still remains lagging. We might see huge amounts of shows added towards the last few days which might result in big percentage jumps towards the end.
