Impact
Well The Jungle Book is the early frontrunner right now.
AniNate
I'm not sure how much of Billy Lynn is effects work but if it gets hosannas I could see it being the favorite here. Maybe Story of Your Life if not that. The rest I'm guessing will be Rogue One, Fantastic Beasts, The Jungle Book and The BFG

Impact
Why would a sports film be nominated here?
AniNate
It's also a war movie and people are going gaga over the framerate, I dunno
The Panda
The Jungle Book Story of Your Life Doctor Strange Billy Lynn Rogue One I think TJB is likely taking this home.
WrathOfHan
I think Civil War shouldn't be underestimated. TWS was able to get nominated and CW has more visual effects.

The Panda
This category keeps getting more and more competitive. Lots of potentially visually great movies coming out this year.

Maleficent wasn't nominated in this category. This category usually goes for films that are contenders (especially as we saw last year with no less than three Best Picture nominees) or the biggest hits. The Jungle Book is the only movie locked for a nomination among movies seen so far based on box office and reception.

Your Right, Maleficent was nominated for best costume, my bad. and yeah it usually skews that way. but not always.
Impact
After Ex Machina beating 3 BP nominees and a major blockbuster in this category last year...I have no clue what to say now.

Ex-Machina won because of Vikander Full Frontal, THAT was the biggest special effect of the movie. These effects could have been done with any intern from a mid-tier VFX company. Rorschach
I think Jungle Book has this one in the bag. I would be really surprised if anything is better at this point. Rogue One will for sure be nominated. Everything else is really a toss-up Big Frontrunners: The Jungle Book Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Other Likely Candidates: Arrival (Story of your Life) The BFG Captain America: Civil War Deepwater Horizon Doctor Strange Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them A Monster Calls Passengers Star Trek Beyond Possible but Unlikely: Alice Through the Looking Glass Assassin's Creed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ben-Hur Independence Day: Resurgence The Legend of Tarzan Suicide Squad Warcraft X-Men: Apocalypse
WrathOfHan
I definitely don't think Jungle Book is locked; Ex Machina proved that most CGI=/=the best. I'd say Strange wins right now.
