Solid numbers for both. 16-18M for FSoJ and 18-20M for Shallows.

I thinking more like $10M for Free State of Jones. The ads are plentiful but it looks like something that should be on the History Channel instead of in theaters.

9.2M Thursday

45.7M Friday

61.7M Saturday (+35%)

41.7M Sunday (-32.5% sharper due to Game 7)

149.1M Fri-Sun

158.3M OW

Suppose Sat jump might be too high and Sun might be closer to 35-40%

15 years from now, 2016 will be remembered as the year the talking animated animals took over the film industry. With the exception of Norm of the North, studios will realize talking animals will at least make 100 million dom, and only super heroes have the ability to compete. High-budget dramas and action tent poles will slowly become extinct unless featuring strong animal-form CGI, preferably of either extremely cute or monstrous type. Meanwhile, local zoo attendance will continue to decline.

They will never explain how Ratchet and Clank made only 8 million.

(By the way that actually had less than a 2x multiplier which is very rare for an animated movie.)

What's everyone expecting from The Shallows and Free State of Jones next weekend? The latter is getting a big ad push but I feel it's not connecting. Curious as to what the reviews will be like.

Low teens for STOJ, high teens for Shallows

Well,  the reality is there hasn't been much worth seeing apart from the blockbusters this year so far.  All of the small budget movies with potential look to be bunched up at the end of the year.

I can see that. But you know last summer had Compton, Trainwreck, and Pitch Perfect 2. Earlier, there were movies like Neighbors, Godzilla, 22 Jump Street, World War Z, The Croods, and Life of Pi. Some of that might be quality. But, it's scary to think that a lot of moviegoers only think about going for big event movies. If there are like 7 or 8 of those in a year, sporadic success, and a lot of struggles and bombs, that is a really bad place for the industry. Especially when solid hits, say 100M to 300M are unable to thrive. It is bad because a lot of good stuff comes in that territory. Also, that might limit big movies in the long haul. Batman Begins, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger are all in this range. If it is getting hit hard, it can limit the mega-monsters of the future. How does the industry revitalize movies that are profitable and strong but not mega-monsters and engage moviegoers to come out for some of those too?
