Lucy had better marketing and also came right on the heels of Winter Soldier which boosted Scarlett as an action star.

It also opened in the summer and in a comparative dead zone.  This March has been far more competitive.

There seems to be some confusion between GitS being a popular anime and it being popular period.  Yes, it may be amazing for anime fans, but anime fans don't make for a formidable built-in audience.  Anime is and likely always will be a niche genre for movies.  This was a bold attempt to bring it into the mainstream but the broad interest just isn't there.  It may get a slight boost from ScarJo being hot in a bodysuit but it's not going to be a memorable success and frankly, never had a chance to be one.

Power Rangers opened with $40 million, which was above expectations but is still hardly a runaway success and that movie had a much bigger built-in fan base than GitS does.

lol, what kind of bizarre world is this where I'm seeing people celebrate a $1.8M Thursday number and $20M opening weekend? These numbers are bad and they should feel bad. Were people really expecting under $1M previews and under $20M weekend? That's nearly as preposterous as those people who thought GITS could've cracked $50M OW a few weeks ago.

This movie was totaly buried by the press. All the other big movies had a lot of free good press. Gits had none of that, almost all the articles were about the stupid controversy.

Power Rangers has a built in fan base.

Boss Baby is for kids.

Completely different trajectory.

thinking boss baby and gits is gonna bomb

1.5 in previews is bad

PR was a superhero movie which has more frontloaded previews, animated movies tend to have weak previews. BB did better than both Trolls ($950K) and Home ($650K) in previews both doing $45M+ OW

The power of fanboys. Boss Baby will no doubt beat 40M this weekend

LMAO Baumer already just covered this  and your new arguement that 1.5 is bad is just too ridiculous to even argue

If I wasn't sci-fi or anime fan, I would have zero interest in Ghost in the Shell.

The movie doesn't look very appealing to the average person.

Still hoping it can hit 30 m OW on the strength of Scarlett.

The pre-sales are HUGE here in my country for tonight. Lucy was the biggest OW of 2014 at that point in time here. I am guessing Ghost in the Shell will be the big movie event of this Easter here. I am expecting good OS results.

Any ways, disappointed that PR looking like it's going to have a steep drop. Was hoping it still make 15-18M. Now looking like less then that. Looks like BATB might keep it number 1 slot though. Although BB very close to it.

Kong made 3.7 m in Thursday previews and ended up with 61 m OW.

GitS should end up between 28-30 m OW.

I'm not sure why people keep saying the low 20's.

Kong was expected to make $40M off that number but then really broke out on Saturday and ending up playing more like a family film.

Of course for all we know GITS breaks out as well and goes over $30M....but that's what makes this fun....the guessing game and not knowing exactly which way a film is going to go

It will be frontloaded.

Why are you saying this? We have no clue how PR is gonna perform.

Basing it off how good GITS and BB are doing that's all.
