grey ghost
Typically the reputation gets worse. Any examples of blockbusters where the reputation got better over the years?
department store basement
The first Harry Potter film, though probably that's more because the generation that grew up with that film are now critics. Amadeus
The Phantom Menace. After TFA was released I noticed many people writing they missed George Lucas. As if they realized films based on creativity is better than films based on nostalgia. Many great articles has since 2015 been written about the themes of TPM that not even I have thought of. Jar Jar is annoying but he is nevertheless a great part of the Star Wars saga. The idea of him is great although I don't really like him as much as I did back then.

That would arguably be an example of the other way around, maybe it rebounded a bit among some with TFA, but. That movie reception was good at the time, the movie had one of the best legs ever in history for a big first weekend movie, I think it is still the best legs ever for a ow over 50m with a 6.66 multiplier. During the summer of 1999 it was not badly received at all and was mostly loved by audience. The movie went down over time on RT, in 2004 it was still fresh above 60%, it is now at 55%. Brainbug
The Lost World. I have yet to meet a person who really dislikes it after seeing it again. Its still not generally well-liked but i think its better than in 1997. Matrix Reloaded' reputation is also a bit better now than in 2003. Many people just see it now as a confusing, but still enjoyable Action-No-Brainer and not so much as the most disappointing thing since TPM. (Revolutions is (deservedly) still hated though).
dxmatrixdt
maybe Avatar? starts at the top, then does sort of an upside down parabola? The Matrix Revolutions Captain America: Civil War.... in the future? Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Interstellar is starting to show on tv alot Batman Begins War of the Worlds Star Trek Into Darkness X-Men: Apocalypse - I hope it does.... The Matrix - increasing from already a great rep. X-Men: First Class I, Robot The Fast and the Furious (always hot) Deep Impact (has stayed scientifically accurate) The Polar Express Minority Report Shutter Island Prometheus Inglorious Basterds District 9 Independence Day 2 Kingdom of Heaven Batman V Superman and ATTACK OF THE CLONES!!!!!!! Webslinger
^ Avatar, District 9, and Inglourious Basterds were all Best Picture nominees. It's pretty safe to say that they were all quite well received in their day.

Vertigo being an extreme example of that, even have a wikipedia section about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertigo_(film)#Re-evaluation A lot of it was when the auteur theory became really popular with him being put often as an example. Vertigo when to very mixed reception to a top 10 movie on many list decade afters.

How exactly has it's reputation improved over time? Like most films that grow insanely popular, there is usually backlash. Titanic seemed to get a lot of shit by people from numerous people. I feel the reception has warmed up a little bit in recent years but only a little. Idk. I'm probably wrong but I'm not in a mood to argue over it.
