Blankments Posted August 16, 2020 Share Posted August 16, 2020 (edited) Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony… THE LAST AIRBENDER Earlier this month, Blankments Productions revealed their plans to adapt the iconic animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender into a series of live-action films. Today, we’re ready to reveal the cast and crew of the first film, along with overall plans for the franchise, with quotes from director Jon M. Chu. “I’ve been working my whole career for something large-scale to direct, and it would certainly be hard to find something bigger than these films,” said Chu. The films will be shot as one whole production, for a variety of reasons. The first being that as this is a fantasy series about children, this will prevent the children aging too quickly to embody the characters. Furthermore, Chu and Blankments Productions views The Last Airbender as a property that deserves an adaptation a la The Odyssey or Lord of the Rings, where they can guarantee the whole story will be told without much interference from outside influences. “I understand the gamble Blankments is taking,” Chu stated. “When the previous adaptation was a critical and commercial failure, committing to these many films sight unseen is truly a risk.” The vagueness of the number of the films being mentioned here is intentional. Although announced at the Oscars as a trilogy of films, that is not set in stone. “My goal with these movies is to make the films as excellent a cinematic adaptation as possible,” Chu answered. “That means that we are shooting as much as we can to get the core of the story down, while adapting it so these films have enough narrative arc within them to stand alone as satisfying cinematic experiences. However, I - and the execs at Blankments - am well aware that this film is partially meant to engage a new generation of young fans, and as such, we can’t be releasing films over 3 hours long like Lord of the Rings.” The decision will be made after the release of the first film and its ensuing commercial and critical reception of just how many films these will be. Although publicly committed to three films, anonymous sources say five total films is much more likely. However many films there will be, the first film, The Boy in the Iceberg, will cover the entirety of season 1. “Some might think this is a large array of ground to cover for the first movie, and we are likely to repeat the mistakes of the past adaptation,” Chu said, “but with our writing team focused on adapting to a cinematic structure, we discovered rather quickly that season 1 of the show is very intentionally loose, and that adding more of a traditional narrative structure to it revealed how to get the story we needed to set up the rest of the movies rather easily.” The writing team Chu is speaking is made of four people: Michael Dante DiMartino, Bryan Konietzko, Michael Ardnt and Adele Lim. DiMartino and Konietzko were immediately involved because of their creation of the property (they also serve as producers on the film), and Arndt was brought on early in the process to help work with the translation to cinematic plot structure. However, when Chu got attached, he brought on Lim, who he knew was particularly good at snappy dialogue along with cultural authenticity for the film, after he had a great time working with her on Crazy Rich Asians. The crew is made up of several talented people. After interviewing several composers, Dario Marianelli (Amulet, Atonement) was ultimately hired to work on the series of films, citing an interest to do a large-scale project like this, while also being chosen because of his work on Kubo and the Two Strings. Chu will be using his recent standard cinematographer, Alice Brooks, on the film, with Tim Yip, Academy-Award nominee for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, doing the costume design. And now… for the cast. Before getting into it, Chu had this to say: “The world of Avatar is undeniably an Asian one, but it is also a fantasy one. Rather than feeling tied to a need to make every nation in the film correspond to a certain ethnicity, we chose in casting for actors that genuinely fit the role regardless of where in Asia they came from. That is not to say that the nations don’t have their own culture in the film; rather, keeping them homogeneous as one might expect was not a priority in our mind.” Chu also added quickly, “Also, be aware that this is an adaptation and as such, we are aiming to adjust things so that way we are giving people who are incredibly familiar with The Last Airbender’s story a new experience. Moreover, some of the changes that will be quite evident with these casting decisions have been deliberated quite a bit and ultimately determined to allow us to tell the story we want to retell in the wholly new way cinema allows us to.” The following is the main cast for The Last Airbender: The Boy in the Iceberg: Ian Chen as Aang: The Last Airbender himself, and of course, the Avatar too. In The Boy in the Iceberg, Aang will awaken a hundred years later to a world that’s wholly unrecognizable to him, and learn to come to terms with his identity as the Avatar. Siena Agadong as Katara: Aang’s closest friend and eventual teacher. The sole waterbender in the Southern Water Tribe, Katara will discover just how powerful she is when she and Aang journey to the North Pole to get trained in the art of waterbending. Moreover though, she will reveal just how important hope is to the world. Forrest Goodluck as Sokka: Katara’s older brother and the goofy brains of the group. Sokka is still somewhat reeling from being left behind by the men of his tribe who went off to fight in the war, including his own father. Sokka will struggle with attempting to be the leader of the three on their journey, despite possessing no bending ability whatsoever. Ryan Potter as Prince Zuko: The Fire Nation’s crown prince, or at least he was until he was banished for speaking out of turn. After searching fruitlessly for the Avatar for three years, Aang has finally returned, and with him, a chance for Zuko to regain his honor. Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Jet: A freedom fighter whose group the main three encounter on their way to the North Pole. Jet fights the Fire Nation by any means necessary. Jet has been changed from male to female in this adaptation, in order to both add another strong female character to the franchise, but moreover, to allow for a larger role within the story that will become much clearer in later installments of the franchise. Lulu Antariksa as Suki: The leader of the Kyoshi Warriors, another group of people who the main three will encounter on their journey. Devoted to one of Aang’s past lives, they become quick allies of the heroes, with Suki having a bit of a thing for Sokka as well. Auli’i Cravalho as Princess Yue: Princess of the Southern Water Tribe. When the group finally makes it to the North Pole, Yue will grow close to Sokka and possibly end up being the key to victory - or failure - of the Water Tribe. With Chow Yun-Fat as Iroh: Zuko’s uncle and former heir to the Fire Nation’s throne. Iroh has suffered great tragedy in his life, but now seeks to guide and help his nephew in any way possible. Unlike most people in the Fire Nation, Iroh is greatly in touch with his spiritual side and has a deep sense of inner balance, and wishes to pass this onto his more tumultuous nephew. And Daniel Dae Kim as Commander Zhao: A rival to Zuko’s quest to capture Aang, Commander Zhao is ruthless and a favorite of the Fire Lord. Zhao is willing to do whatever it takes to win the war, even if it means destroying everything in his way to do so. The Last Airbender: The Boy in the Iceberg, directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Michael Dante DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko and Michael Arndt & Adele Lim, is scheduled for release on November 15, Y8. A horror/action film about an up and coming MMA fighter who takes a mysterious drug in order to recover from a debilitating injury only to discover that the side effects are nightmarish. Date is set for may 23 y9 Gareth Evans ( the raid, Apostle) will direct Starlight 2 will be released February 14 y9. The film follow Halair and ragtag crew of friends as they discover a lost group of explorers lead by Liena's older brother ( Chris Helmsworth) Phil Lord and Chris Miller are directing a space opera of thier own idea. Not many details are known but it's said that the project is similar in tone to deadpool. The film is aimed at a July y9 release Dave Filoni has moved on from clover to work on a pg 13 animated project inspired by Men in Black, James Bond, and the x-files in the same style as starlight. September 26th is the date Fantastic four will come on December 19. It follows the group as they battle Namor. Doris (Jackie Weaver) and her jackrabbit followers kidnap Perri the Bilby (Katherine Langford), forcing Red (Hugh Jackman) the kangaroo to go after her, much to Andrew the Cane Frog’s, the former frog rockstar (Rick Springfield) disappointment to be left alone again. Red chases the jackrabbits into the canyons as he attempts to grab Perri, only to catch Dorris’ scrawny nephew Oliver (Chris Hemsworth). Oliver explains Doris is about three spots on the left. Oliver asks if there’s any other rabbits Red needs him to spot, pointing out to his friend Nigel, who waves. Red declines but thanks Oliver as he tosses him away. Oliver yells “No Problem” as he’s tossed off into the distance. The chase proceeds into a nearby red ant colony, as Doris knocks over an ant hill to lose Red, leaving the kangaroo to travel through a plume of dirt and stinging ants. Red tries to wipe his eyes, as he maintains the chase, humorously squashing two ants about to start their own adventure. Red snatches Perri but trips, sending both of them falling as Perri urls up into a ball, only to be caught by a rabbit. As the chase proceeds to a nearby canopy, which turns into a giant game of keep away as the other animals in the outback watch, with two koalas commenting like a soccer game. Red grabs Perri but is soon surrounded by rabbits, only to find Andrew who flails his arms around. Red throws Perri to Andrew, only for Andrew to miss, after pulling a hamstring. Perri rolls to a nearby train track to the other side, as a train passes forcing Red, Doris and the rabbits to wait. Red and Doris begin small talk as they wait. Red: How’s the hip? Doris: Been worse. Red: And Reggie? Doris: Got eaten. Red: Shame, he was a good bloke, Reg. Doris: Thanks, love. As the train passes through, Red brutally kicks Doris into a rock as he leaps after Perri, as the two hop onto a train and escape. Andrew, reveals himself, exasperated, wanting privacy. Red is confused as he left Andrew behind, as Andrew apologizes for them having to deal with his rowdy fans, but he knows how to slip away. Andrew then starts to admire his flabby pecs, mid sentence. Unlike other space opera franchises being about a quest to save the galaxy/world, this project is said to be more small stakes.
