Fossil Record Productions-- the indie animation outfit that made this year's The Insect God and Funny Business, as well as doing the CGI effects for Walking With Dinosaurs: The Cinematic Experience-- has just gotten its first major franchise contract! Britain-based 2000 AD Comics has reached out to Fossil Record Productions to produce animated film adaptations of its works. So far, films based on Judge Dredd, Flesh, and Strontium Dog have been confirmed to be in development. 

 

"We've experimented with live-action movies before, but animation is really the best medium to bring the thrills of 2000 AD to the wider public," a representative of the company said. "Fossil Record has a history of producing high-quality films on time and under budget, at a fraction of the cost of what the bigger studios could do."

Phoenix Fire Entertainment is announcing a swap of directors for one of its Y9 projects. Jack Bender will no longer direct the untitled thriller destined for Christmas week; instead, Notorious remake helmer and Best Director nominee Karyn Kusama will take the helm. The film will, all the same, be intended as Phoenix Fire's out-of-competition entry for the Y9 Film Festival, should there be a Festival.

 

Bender will instead helm another project. In his case, he'll direct the in-competition entry for the studio, which will be a biographical drama. More news on that soon.

 

As for Sam Mendes' Sleep Deprivation, that project has been put on standby for now.

AFFINITY announces its first project, Taika Waititi's dark fantasy dramedy THIS WASN'T SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN, which follows five strangers (Richard E. Grant, Zendaya, Anthony Ramos, Toni Collette, and Sam Heughan) who, over the course of a single day, die in freak accidents and then become the playthings of a mysterious archangel (voiced by Waititi) who promises to bring one of them back to life.

For its out-of-competition festival selection, New Journey Pictures will be submitting an adaptation of Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower helmed by 12 Years a Slave director Steve McQueen. Storm Reid has been cast in the leading role as Lauren Olamina, and the film has the following poster billing of main cast members:

New Journey Pictures Animation is moving ahead with an adaptation of the SEGA video game franchise Super Monkey Ball, which will share the title of the franchise and receive fast-tracking for a Y9 release. The Mitchells vs. the Machines director Michael Rianda is in talks to direct (unless someone has already claimed him 😅).

More details on the mystery project of Ashton Corbin has been revealed as it is not only her directorial debut but she’ll be co-writing the script alongside Academy Award nominated screenwriter and playwright Linda Woolverton (Beauty and The Beast, The Lion King and Mulan). Both Madellen Mills (Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey) and Ella Jay Basco (DC’s Birds of Prey) have been casted as the two leads.

In addition to its acquisition of the franchise rights to 2000 AD, Fossil Record Productions has announced a new original animated movie, which has not yet entered production. According to the studio, the movie will follow an orphaned pilot whale attempting to find his way back to his pod during the season of the dreaded grindadráp, the Faroese whale hunt in which pilot whales are driven ashore and slaughtered. The movie, tentatively titled Dark Water, is intended partly to raise awareness of the brutality of these hunts. 

 

"Imagine if something like Bambi was rated R," says studio head Mark Pierce. "A really hard, serious R rating. It's the story of a baby animal-- a whale, in this case-- growing up in the wild, but it doesn't pull any punches. It's pretty much a horror movie, with us as the unknowable, invincible monsters. It's dark, it's bleak, and it's terrifying, but it looks like an old Disney movie. It's not a comedy either-- it's a commentary on the cruelty of man towards nature." The only teaser image revealed so far is a screenshot of the movie's protagonist, an adorable wide-eyed young whale. Suffice to say, however, that kids won't be asking for any stuffed animals of him . . .

Continuing the tradition started by Y7's Monster Bug Wars (and fellow studio Blankments Productions' Looping), and this year's Up in the Sky, Phoenix Fire Entertainment is moving forward its line of April off-beat sci-fi projects with its April Y9 release.

 

Remember That One Night... is directed by Chad Hartigan, the director of Little Fish, and stars Elizabeth Olsen and Algee Smith as a recently split couple who get together in a restaurant to discuss their life as a pair one last time. The film takes place many years into the future and the main set is a futuristic restaurant, but in a message of kindness, the humanity of today's era will not be changed (only for the better).

 

Worth noting perhaps the film's main technical keynote: the film will be displayed at 60 frames per second, in order to achieve a sense of realness and "being there on the moment" despite the sci-fi, visual effect-heavy setting. Ang Lee's Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk has already attempted this before, and we hope to bring the concept a better realization on-screen. In CAYOM, Blankments' Hypercompetency incorporated a nifty HFR-heavy visual component, which we also hope to respect.

The second announcement for AFFINITY's debut slate will be Claire Scanlon's dark dramedy THE PRODIGAL FAMILY. The film follows a married couple (Bill Hader and Rachel McAdams) and their child (Roman Griffin Davis) in 1960s America who have taken over the cultural landscape for their incredible psychic and life affirming powers. When the CIA seeks to use them as living weapons in the cold war, they're forced to reckon with the target that fame has placed on their backs, along with the traumatic events that inspired their powers in the first place.

Another Y9 announcement from Phoenix Fire Entertainment.

 

In May, we're releasing the third IMAX-bound film from the studio's Y9 slate, alongside Grand Theft Auto and Phoenix Fire Family Animation debut Invader Zim: the action film Rocket Hero.

 

Directed by Mr. Robot, Homecoming and Briarpatch episodes director Sam Esmail, Tom Cruise stars as Jaeden "Rocket Hero" King, a soldier experimented on by the US military to become basically a real life Captain America. Known for his "human cannonball launch" stunts, he is tasked with three operations in particular: rescuing a hijacked plane, leading an assault on a terrorist cell in Turkey, and also leading a hostage rescue in Saudi Arabia. Fail significantly at any of these tasks, and he and his family are written out of existence.

 

Taking direct inspiration from works such as Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk and Sam Mendes' 1917, the film's three acts will be mainly composed of the three setpieces, with only brief scenes interluding them. The scenes will be shot and/or heavily edited as one-takes, to further enhance the "in the moment" grittiness and suspense of each of these sequences. The stuntwork is heavily practical, with Cruise committing to all of these stunts, as he usually does. The thematics of the film will dive straight into military ethics and the dark terrors of hypothetical (and real) human experimentation.

 

It will be the second film in the Four Elements spiritual quadrilogy, after this year's Floodbath.

THE LOST EMPIRE

Spoiler

Benjamin Wallfisch's score for The Lost Empire is suitably epic and brooding for a sci-fi steampunk epic, but with hints of a fantasiacal atmosphere as well. His Hammer of the Gods and A Cure for Wellness scores are sources of inspiration for the darkly magical and powerful oozes present in this magnetic, brute force score, particularly in the major action sequences.

 

Hammer of the Gods: Opening Title is a source of inspiration for the opening act of the film; Ambush is a sample of the action sequences; Magnificent Isn't It for other mood pieces in the film.

 

 

 

 

The score is mostly original, but there is a new rendition of The Crystal Chamber, the most iconic theme of the original Atlantis: The Lost Empire, in the scene where Kida is absorbed by the Heart of Atlantis.

FAR CRY

Taking direct inspiration from Far Cry 3's dubstep-heavy original soundtrack, Cliff Martinez goes for a synthwave-based, bassy score, fitting of a nonstop action movie.

MIGHTY FALL

Mark Mothersbaugh's synthy style is brought forth once again for his take on Mighty Fall, a live action/animation hybrid space opera.

 

There are tracks that follow a more lighthearted approach (such as It's Just a Regular Show, demonstrated below), in more humor-friendly sequences. The more emotion heavy sequences take influence from Laptop Breaks. Meanwhile, the third act of the film has a far darker mood - influenced by Flashback - and the action sequences are akin to Sakaar Chase.

Collaborating with director Michaël Dudok De Wit a second time after 2016's The Red Turtle, french composer Laurent Perez Del Mar returns to the fantasy well with Everything We Miss, with much of its score inspired by the composer's earlier work and his use of orchestral arrangements, albeit more subdued to better accommodate the darker tone of the work.

 

Due to the film's short length, the complete score only lists fourteen tracks in total, and keeping with the film's themes, each track name is a one-word description of the scene it accompanies. These fourteen tracks are:

"Dawn"

 

Inspired by "The Girl" from The Red Turtle, this track plays first when Will apologizes to Anna for his comments to her at bedside, and the shadow ascends through the roof and we're introduced to this peculiar world it and its fellow creatures inhabit. It's simultaneously hopeful yet somewhat dour, complimenting Anna's conflicting feelings over her boyfriend.

 

 

 

"Rock"

 

Inspired by "Giants" from I Kill Giants, this track plays when the strange creatures out in outer space tries to hurl a rock at planet earth, intercut with Will's increasing self-induced paranoia of what he fears that Anna is up to when he isn't there. Being the film's most bombastic score, it includes a similar peak as the rock's about to hit earth and Will has a breakdown.

 

 

 

"June"

 

One of the film's only scores that do not rely on orchestral arrangements, June plays during one of the film's more ethereal moments when McAvoy's narration speaks about the passage of time and how often we fail to perceive it before great changes have already been made. Inspired by "The Kite" from the Brazillian documentary A Loucura Entre Nos ("The Madness Among Us"), the score starts off sounding like a ticking clock before transitioning to a slow piano for the remainder of the track, with the ticking fading into the background to represent how we slowly lose track of time.

 

 

 

 

"Shadow"

 

As the name implies, it's the theme for the "shadow" that continually torments Will throughout the film's runtime, and becomes more prevalent as the character pops up more frequently in the film's latter half. It's inspired by the track "Despair" from The Red Turtle, with a few foreboding viola strokes sprinkled in.

 

 

 

"Card"

 

Card is one of the film's more emotional themes, representing not just the lone anurid breaking formation in order to try and have a direct impact on Will and Anna's lives, but also of the small spark of hope that crops up both in this scene and the end of the film. It's inspired by "Thousand Times" from I Kill Giants, one of the more subdued pieces of an otherwise bombastic work.

 

 

 

"Cliff"

 

Set during the film's climax, Cliff is both the score's darkest yet simplistically produced track, composed only of the main cello with a few backing instruments. The emphasis is on dread, as Will finds himself both on a metaphorical and a literal cliff about to drop to his doom, egged on by the sinister shadow creature. Sprinkles of Shadow mentioned earlier are included, but the effect is fairly subtle. This track isn't inspired by a Del Mar piece, but the closest comparison would be this:

 

 

 

"Miss"

 

The theme for the end of the film, seeping into the end credits a bit after the halfway point of the track. It begins as Will sinks to the bottom of the ocean after he misses the sharp rocks he intended to hit, and the shadow laments its how Will just "had to miss" before it evaporates. It's inspired by yet another track from The Red Turtle, "L'au Revoir", but without the choir in the middle.

New Journey Pictures has elected to drop its Classics subsidiary in favor of rolling its whole live-action feature film output under the umbrella of the same base distributor.

 

Regarding the decision, an associate clarified, "we believe that Cayom audiences are more receptive to the techniques and subject matters of independent art films then ever before, even if unconsciously. Therefore, we will continue to release such smaller mid-budget films straight to wide releases as we would a VFX-driven tentpole, and we will trust audiences and their ability to connect with the material. We also believe that the current overall direction and goals of our greenlit projects warrant this consolidation."

 

Documentary films will now release under the same subsidiary, but the NJP Nonfiction label has been dropped in favor of a new label, which is called Magnifying Glass Inc.

Idris Elba (Voltron: Rise of Lotor, The Jungle Book) and Zoe Saldana (Guardian of The Galaxy series) have signed on the cast of Gargoyles. Idris Elba will voice and do the motion capture for the main protagonist, the gargoyle Goliath as Zoe Saldana will play Elisa Maza, a human NYPD detective who forms a friendship with Goliath.
