I don't understand..BR2049 is hyped from everywhere but it's still a flop, there's some disconnect between critics/social networks and the real world..

It honestly is mindblowing how much there is a disconnect. I can't say I understand how the box office works anymore since I don't really understand American culture as much as I did 10 years ago. This felt super hyped. It was everywhere. I couldn't escape marketing for BR in the last two weeks. Then it struggles to make 30 million. My mind has melted.

You forgot the part of Barack Obama not being born in America. Otherwise you're correct.

I guess if there's anything to be really disappointed about, it's that October is gonna be really weak now considering how much it was riding on Blade Runner being big. The next few weeks look bleak.

BUT THE ORIGINAL FILM HAPPY DEATH DAY IS GOING TO MAKE 60M NEXT WEEKEND!

European critics tend to be more lenient for most movies in general and the fact that most movies make more OS. People just didn't like Warcraft and on top of that it wasn't really destined for big numbers, I don't see why Disney would take joy in it flopping.

How people didnt like Warcraft? it only flopped in NA.  Bruh it grossed around 105 million in Europe. When movies gross around 100 ni europe that usually means over 130-140 in US. Warcraft did great in Europe/Asia it ONLY flopped in US for the reasons i stated above

Now it's obvious but before summer if someone had said that,

Alien + Mummy + Kingsman2 + BR49 combined dom could come under IT's or not much higher,

you would have thought the person has gone cray cray.

74 + 80 + 96 + 80 = 330

On social networks small groups of fans or supporters can create the illusion of being representative of the population as a whole by being much more active than the active and sometimes coordinating.

That's certainly part of the explanation.

2049 marks one of the more surprising under-performances of the year given the strong pre-release signals supporting expectations for an opening weekend north of $50 million (the studio itself had expected $45-50 million, while we were forecasting a more bullish $54 million). Social media activity, critical reviews, and pre-sales reports from multiple ticketing outlets were remarkably strong, but that buzz didn’t cross over to mainstream audiences.

The good news: Blade Runner 2049 generated an “A-” CinemaScore, while its Flixster audience rating stands at a very encouraging 87 percent with a 4.3/5.0 rating this morning. Staying power could still be in the film’s future with no tentpole releases on the calendar until November’s Thor: Ragnarok, and overseas earnings will remain a factor for 2049 as the studio estimates it will bring in $48-52 million from 60 percent of international markets this weekend (comparable to GravityMad Max: Fury Road, and The Martian‘s overseas launches).
